I’m struggling to figure out what to get for our kids (boy and girl, each about 9) as a symbol of our new joint family. Anyone have suggestions?

That's very cute. I usually look around on etsy or pinterest for ideas. On etsy I found these gifts that could be good (necklace for girl, dog tags for boy). Also this puzzle that can be put together during the wedding. Everything is customizable so you can change the names/words, links below:

A piece of jewelry is always a nice idea, as it can be kept forever! What about two lcokets with a picture of the family inside?
Another idea is a framed poem or passage about the special occasion of your families joining. Along with this, you could give them a little toy or something they're interested in. They may not appreciate the framed gift yet, but they definitely will in years to come and the toy will keep them happy right now!
