Gift cards...registry...is it rude???

Gabby, on October 20, 2009 at 4:33 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

Where is everyone registering? Is this still a common thing? I have a big family and if we don't register, everyone will bombard my mom with questions. But we want to be able to buy the things ourselves after we find our new apartment to see what will be a fit. How do we encourage gift cards? Or can we not? Is it rude? Do we pick a place and then just rely upon exchanges? HELP!!!

Use your Mum being bombarded with questions about gifts to your advantage. She can spread the word, that you'd appreciate monetary gifts.

When you register, you register what you're interested in...which can include gift cards...just a hopefully helpful hint

Noel is right, word of mouth is always a good waySmiley smile But still register around, no matter what, there are always people that want to buy a gift so put things on it that no matter where you live, it will work, also on mostly everywhere, you can put down on your registry that you want gift cards Smiley smile

I agree with Traci--if you don't register then you will end up with a hundred and one things that you DON'T want! People love to have an idea of what to get a bride and groom (at least I know I do!) and if gift cards on the registry I personally don't find that at all offensive.

Register at one or two places, and include gift cards on your registry, just don't register for only gift cards, Register for stuff you'll always need, like bed linens and towels, an extra pot and pan, nice drinking glasses, etc..and keep a price range from anything under $20 to $300-400, some people will want to buy individual gifts, others will want to do a group gift.

Thanks everyone! Where are your favorite places to register? I'm torn between: Bed Bath Beyond, Target, Macy's and Crate and Barrel.

I agree with Mrs Schmidt. I'm at Target and then also have a honeymoon registry at buyourhoneymoon.com

We registered at Bed Bath Beyond, Dillards, and Sears. BBB has the best stuff I think. I LOVE Target and did end up with some gift cards there.

I registered at Target and JC Penney. I think Target is a great place to register because there is something for every budget there. I have things that are like $6 on my registry on up to $200. There is a great selection of things there! But I also registered at JC Penney to give people options. JC Penney's is a little more pricey but they have GREAT sales!

I am at Target, Kohls, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Crate and Barrel and we enabled the gift card option at all four places, this way people have the choice to get a gift or get a card with money towards something on the registry.

Gift cards are great, but double check the policies on them. I know some expire, etc after a certain amount of time. You don't want to get a million gift cards and then lose the money either!

A friend of mine recently got married and they didn't register for a thing. Turns out, everyone gave them cash or gift cards except for a handful of people out 200-250 people. Smiley smile

Not sure if this still holds true but I worked at Bed Bath & Beyond in high school and if you had a registry there you could return anything for exchange or CASH as long as it was marked as purchased on your registry. Check into the registry return policies at the other places you are considering registering at. But I agree the only way to let people know you want gift cards/cash without being rude is word of mouth.

I'm registered on Amazon and Bed, Bath and Beyond. BBB is FANTASTIC. We already had a weird thing where someone bought us a gift that wasn't on the registry, and we took it back and exchanged it for something on the registry. They had absolutely no problem and didn't even question it for a moment. They are very helpful and have fantastic customer service. When we were first registering, we drove to the only BBB around (which is about 40 minutes away) and by the time we got to the store it was almost closed. Guess what? They let us stay as long as we wanted, past closing hours. They were going to be there anyway with cleaning up, etc. and they were so friendly and accomodating. I definitely recommend BBB, and I had never even shopped there before having my registry there! They have definitely won a long-term customer! :-)

I agree with Noel. My girlfriend and her husband only wanted money and each mom spread the word to their side of the family and they did not get one single gift but they did get a ton of cash!

You all are great!!! Thank you!!! Yes, I think it's looking like BBBynd, and or Target or Macy's. Macy's is pricy, but has great sales. But Target has so much for multiple price points! I really appreciate all your help!
