So, I am getting married in April - I have plenty of time to think about this. My father & I haven't had a relationship for about a decade, but I am cordial with him so as not to upset my mother. I DO NOT want him to walk me down the aisle, but I also don't want this to be something that upsets my mother. Any creative ways to get out of it without her freaking out? I'm pretty feminist so I considered walking down the aisle myself & claiming political views, but I'm not sure I want to do that, either. Maybe I could just ask my mom to walk me? All ideas welcome.

Thank you for this. I’m not traditional by any stretch and the notion of being “given away” made me very uncomfortable. I still wanted my dad to walk me down the aisle and looked at is my dad supporting me at an important moment as he had basically my entire life. But not “giving me away.” That said, I was a firm no on the father-daughter dance and I know my dad was disappointed. However, as you’ve said, I think it’s important to remember that participating (or not) in these traditions is not representative of your entire relationship. I love my dad, but no father daughter dance! And I’m a firm believer in making new traditions Smiley smile
