Getting my dress ready for preservation.. some thoughts

Jennifer, on January 26, 2014 at 1:03 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6

I got my preservation kit in the mail earlier this week. Today I actually decided to get it out the closet to start getting ready to get it out.

I didn't think I had any stains, but I've had to search around the dress and mark stain spots with stickers... guess I was messier than I thought, oops Smiley smile Now I'm trying to psyche myself up to unbustling the dress. I guess that's easier than actually bustling though Smiley smile

Just an FYI, it seems that most wedding dress preservation is through Wedding Gown Preservation Company in Endicott, NY. My dress store sold kits through them and they were like $200. I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend that much. I ordered a cheaper kit off of Alfred Angelo, and it came from them with an Alfred Angelo logo above the Wedding Gown Preservation Co's. The one straight from the company included up to 3 accessories, and the AA one I have to pay additional for accessories, prob why it costs less. Just for reference if you're thinking of preserving yours!

The Alfred Angelo one came to like $148 or something with shipping costs. I have to pay $15 to include my veil in.

Mine was from The Wedding Preservation Co. I actually didn't even add in any accessories. I didn't want to have my veil preserved because I have a sister and my MOH who both expressed that they may like to wear it one day. I didn't want that sealed up in with m dress.

I went back and forth about sending the veil in, but I just decided today that I am going to do it. It was a little wrinkled coming out of the bag with the dress today. I'm just afraid of it discoloring over time or something. That's nice that you have those ladies in your life that may want to use your veil. If mine is ever worn again, it'll probably be in 20 years or more if I ever have a daughter and she wants to use it. Who knows, we'll see Smiley smile-

Anyone that has done this before - do they need to be able to do the bustle up again when they put it in the box? My bustle was done with coordinating colored ribbon and there are 2 that I just cannot get the knots undone on. One ribbon is completely frayed. Can I just cut them??

Depending on why your keeping it, I wouldn't cut the bustle strings. If you think its possible it may get worn again then it wouldn't need bustled! But I would bet you could just leave them tied? I'm not planning on untying mine if any of them are still intact.

The instructions say to unbustle the dress before you ship it, so I have to do it Smiley sad

I'm keeping it mainly for myself to have in a safe place out of the way, but who knows if I have a daughter that wants to wear it in the future or something. But I guess the bustle can just be fixed up if that were the case?
