Getting married with braces

Lily, on August 5, 2016 at 9:38 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 38

I recently pulled out my baby tooth (3 weeks ago). I always thought I would live with my baby tooth forever, but it became very loose lately and I had no choice but to pull it out. Now I feel I have to do braces to fix my smile and this has never been part of my plan before the wedding. I talked to the orthodontist today... Invisaline (the invisible option) is not suitable for me, ans I can only wear the clear braces with a metal wire across the teeth. My wedding is next April and I was told I couldn't temporarily take them off. Smiley sad I already paid for most of the things for my wedding and now I have to wear braces on my big day. Guess I am not asking a questions but just disappointed.

They have braces where the brackets are clear with a white wire vs the metal ones, that might be a less visible option? that stinks, I'm sorry Smiley sad

I would get a second opinion. I have no idea why they couldn't be taken off - yes it would be a big expense but for me it would be worth it.

Try getting a consultation with an orthodontist that specializes in Invisalign. Definitely at least get another opinion about getting them off for the wedding.

My aunt had her braces removed just for her wedding, she had no issues whatsoever. But then again this was 30-40 years ago.

With the pain associated with the night they put them on it would never, ever be worth it to take them off for an event.

To this day the first night of having braces was the worst of my life.

I know this is not encouraging tp hear but thought I would be honest. If your wedding is in april, why not just wait. We are 8 months out..

You'll need to decide which will bother you more in pictures - being unhappy in braces or being unhappy with your smile as it is now. If I were you, I'd wait until after your wedding. Even clear braces will still be visible in pictures, and they get discolored easily.

My mom had braces on her wedding day. They temporarily removed the ones on her front teeth for her wedding and honeymoon, she got them put back on as soon as she returned. You could also look into Invisalign, it's more like a clear retainer.

I myself have braces at the moment, they should be off by my wedding. Maybe you can do clear braces or white bands to match your teeth. Unless you wait to have your braces put on after your wedding depending on how you feel about your smile.

Is the baby tooth in an obvious location?

Could you wait until after the wedding to have the braces put on?

Also I agree with pp and try to get a second opinion.

They do braces behind the teeth now, I would look into that option as well. I hear the advertisement for it on the radio all the time.

Absolutely get a second opinion. I know someone who went to multiple Invisalign consultations and a couple said she wasn't eligible to get them. She now has them and her teeth look great. Ashley is right. The do braces behind teeth now too.

I lost my last baby tooth as an adult, too. It was a canine and the secondary tooth is embedded in the roof of my mouth. It would be very complicated to swing it down into position. I got a temporary 'flipper' with 1 tooth on it. Perhaps you could do that -- if it is not one of your biting/chewing teeth.

If you lost a tooth completely couldn't they do a dental implant or something instead of moving all the other teeth around?

I just had mine removed, I only needed about six months worth. . I was adamant we take them off for the wedding if we weren't done.

And honestly if you have them off for a week it's not going to kill you. The pain isn't that insufferable. I'm betting they can leave the back brackets on and just pull the front ones and you'll be okay. The back ones with the around the tooth brackets were the worst and you can leave those.

I would get a second or even third opinion. My dad is a dentist and I work in the office. Where the baby tooth is gone is there a hole there? You could always get a flipper if there is and it would cover the hole. There is an acrylic base that fits in your mouth and it has a tooth on it to fit the gap. If your smile is actually crooked you could always do Invisalign. They do a laser mold of your mouth and I feel like pretty much anyone is a candidate so not sure why they said you aren't. Could you post a picture of your smile now? I would be happy to get my dads professional opinion for you.

I'm currently doing invisalign. But even with invisalign, I had "attachments" on my teeth, making it very noticeable. I won't be done before the wedding. I will have 2 more weeks of it after the wedding, but I was really upfront with my doctor and told him that I needed them off for the wedding, or I wasn't going through with it at all.

He laughed at my seriousness and said he takes them off all the time for big events and it's not a big deal at all. I would go get another opinion.

I second the picture. Show us what you mean? Where is the gap?
