Getting married in one state but residing in a different state?

Dominika , on November 1, 2017 at 9:15 AM Posted in Planning 3 14

Hi so I am a little confused and I'm hoping someone can help me out. My fiance and I live in Maryland but we will be having our ceremony in NJ because that's where we are from. I was doing some research and I know I have to get the license in NJ because that's where the ceremony will be. However since I am not a resident it says it has to be done where the ceremony will be so I'm assuming the county that Parsippany is in because thats where everything will take plsce. But it says the license is only valid there so I am confused like does that mean after we get the license and I am married in Parsippany everything is all set and done ? Like do I need to obtain anything from Maryland since that's where we reside ?

Contact the local registrar in the country in New Jersey you are getting married in.

That is a little misleading... H and I live in MS but got married in TN and people elope to AR all the time in MS... call the Court house/City Clerk in Parsippany and ask them for some insight!

So don't quote me on this. I am in a similar situation. Live in PA but getting married in FL. I know I have to get the license in FL and get it filed in FL etc. however for some reason I always thought you still need to go to the county's office in the state you live to get it recognized. I have a coworker who did the exact same thing as me and got married in FL but lives in PA and when I asked her what she did as far as getting it recognized in PA she said nothing, and that you don't have to do anything. Granted I am deff going to be calling my county's office to double check this so I think that is your best bet.

Call the court clerk. We live in FL and got married in OK, and all we had to do was to get our marriage license in OK. We didn't have to do anything in FL. My understanding is that marriages are recognized between every state (so, if you get married in NY and then move to MN, your marriage is recognized without you having to do anything), but definitely call to double-check.

A license is what allows you to get married, and yes it's only valid for you to get married in one county. But after the license you turn the license in to get a marriage certificate. And a marriage certificate is valid is every state. You just couldn't get a license in one county and then get married in another. It's a little weird but the license is temporary until you are actually married and have a certificate.

    ETA: spelling, darn mobile.

For NJ though since I'm not a resident it says I can only get the license from the county that I will be married in

Hi Dominika! You'll need to apply for a marriage license in Parisppany. When they say that the license is only valid in that municipality, it means that you apply for a license in the municipality where you are getting married, and they approve your marriage application to get married there. So you can't apply for a marriage license in Parisppany, then try to use that license in Maryland for example!

You'll apply for your marriage license, get married, have your officiant mail in the completed license, then you'll receive your marriage certificate which is valid throughout the US. You don't need to do anything to recognize your marriage in Maryland, but if you are changing your name you will need to do that process locally!

@Dominika- no the officiant can only mail it back to Parisppany. And then Parisppany issues the marriage certificate. You will then need to contact Parisppany to get a copy of your marriage certificate, Morris county is not involved.

Hello my name is Jonah, I recently got engaged to my finance in Tennessee, however I am a resident in Kentucky, we are getting married in Tennessee and then directly after moving her up to Kentucky to reside with me. Do I apply in Tennessee and get the certificate? Does Kentucky recognize our certificate?

Your Marriage License is recognized statewide. I was married in California but live in Louisiana. Yes,you can only get your certificate for the the state you marry in. Once its filed in the court records and you're issued your license, it's recognized statewide.

I don't think you need to do anything in your home state. I live in NJ - you apply for the marriage license in the city where the ceremony is performed, regardless of where you live. Parsippany is in Morris County so it sounds like the ceremony must be done in Morris County. When you are married, you receive a marriage certificate which is valid everywhere, regardless of where you reside. My first marriage (since annulled) was performed in NYC but I was residing in NJ after the wedding, so NYC is where the license was issued, but nothing had to be done when I took up residence in NJ. If you need to double-check, check with the marriage bureau in Morris County, NJ
