Getting Married During Lent in a Catholic Church

Jenelle, on April 25, 2011 at 8:31 AM Posted in Planning 0 5

Does Anyone know if you can get married in a Catholic Church during lent? I have heard you could but asked our preist and it was a definite no. If you know a church who does, that would be helpful too.

It depends on the diocese and on the parish. In my church, couples are allowed to have a marriage ceremony during lent, but not a full Nuptial mass. Many Catholic churches require you to be a parishioner in order to get married there, so while you can ask around, expect that to be another road block.

Easter is on March 31 in 2013 so if the date you're hoping for is April 20, it's not during lent.

We were looking to doing it before Easter because after going to places the prices before are signifacantly lower so now March is appearing to be when we will do it as long as we can find a church to perform the service.

Do you have to get married in your Church? If you do then I think you'll have to deal with the higher prices.

Most Catholic churches will not perform any celebratory sacrament, such as weddings or baptisms, during lent. However, a priest may make an exception if he is very close to you or your family, or if there is an immediate need for the wedding to take place.

So, if you want a Catholic wedding, you most likely will need to have it after Easter and take the hit on the prices, or have it before Ash Wednesday, which is February 13, 2013.
