Getting a friend ordained in WI, please help :)

SBK, on May 7, 2014 at 10:12 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 2

Hello!

My fiance and I asked a good friend of ours to perform our marriage ceremony. I've researched a lot of websites on how to get ordained and what is required. I just wanted to see if there was anyone out there who has done this already (in WI) and could offer some specifics, or guidance. I am a planner, so I won't do it if there's any doubt, but my biggest fear would be that our marriage wouldn't be legal.

Thank you!

You are right to be concerned. In a lot of states, having an officiant ordained online can cause the marriage to be invalid. However, Wisconsin does not appear to be one of them. Here is some official guidance on the point:

The Universal Life Church is one of the biggest providing online ordinations, and has some specific details on officiating a marriage in Wisconsin:

We are thinking of doing the same thing. Our friend is actually getting ordained this summer he said he's going to classes I'm not sure where? He's doing another wedding for a friend so he's excited to learn it!
