Geeky (but elegant) table decor mock-up

Tracy, on January 25, 2020 at 6:24 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 12
Hi everyone! So we're having a medieval wedding in a Gorgeous setting- stone walls, fountains, climbing roses and wisteria at an Italian Garden (I'm completely holding my breath that the weather is nice!). We really want this to be elegant, but fun, and represent US. We're huge Magic (card game) playing, D & D loving, comicon-going, cosplay-wearing geeks. So we wanted a little of that out there to share at our reception. I found small, gold rimmed terrariums that we're having our favorite Funko pops displayed in (Lord of the Rings, Serenity, The Princess Bride, Doctor Who, & Harry Potter characters), on miss or sand. Behind those, on either side will be one 7" & one 10" glass cylinder base with assorted D & D dice on the bottom, then filled with water and a white floating candles in them. Down the middle of the 8' farm tables will be a gathered (scrunched up & laid length-wise) 10' white chiffon runner with green willow garland with white roses tucked in here & there. Please don't mind the table- this is a rough mock-up on my kitchen table with a full-sized tablecloth instead of the real runner, and I don't have the floating candles in, yet. The rose in the terrarium is a boring option, rather than going with the pops, but I'm still playing around with it. Comments, suggestions? Please be kind, but I could use some input. Thank you!Geeky (but elegant) table decor mock-up 1

I think this is the perfect combination of elegant and "you" that you're going for, although I do think that the colors of the dice are a little bold, especially if you're not using them as your wedding colors.

My FH would love this!! We wanted a d&d theme but we just couldn't find everything we needed, so we went with a Super Mario Bros. theme lol! Also I agree with Caytlyn, I would go with dice that match your wedding colors.

The properly colored dice sets I was looking at were around $13 for a set of seven (we need at least a dozen each to cover the bottom of the vases). This option was much more affordable, but I'm wondering now if I could spray paint these to match the color scheme, or possibly paint them gold, to go with the terrariums.. ?

Oh! I forget to mention- it's a small wedding/reception for about 30 people, so there's only 18 of these vases, but at about $26 for dice per vase, that's a crazy amount of money for geeky filler, so I erred on the side of thrifty. 🤔 Maybe not the best way to go, but we'll find a way to make it work.

I don’t know what D&D dice are but they look cute and will be a nice mix of your “Geeky’ interests and elegance (since they look similar to rocks in a vase). The runner items and the roses in the terrariums look good as well. But, without seeing the Pops characters in your mock up, I wonder if they will shift the elegance and create the feeling of a “kids party” table instead. Maybe a pic would help. Or is there another element that you could use in the terrarium? Possibly a well known type of flower from a “geeky” game or movie or book, etc. I’d instead use the Pops characters in other areas of the wedding, like near the guest book or on the cake table (and as a cake topper) or on your sweetheart table or on a candy/sweets table, etc.

So my FH and I are running into the same problem with wanting to fill our vases with D20 dice sets in our colors but with the price being way over budget. We are going to do a trial vase with dice interspersed with glass vase beads just to fill in the space and cut down costs. We may even try to put the dice on the outside and use the glass bead to fill in the center space.

Clearly this is a "whatever you like" issue as it doesn't have anything to do with hosting your guests, and I'm not sure if you've just included a little of every option in the one photo, but it seems like there is a lot going on with all the random colors and various elements/references. For me it's heavier on the "fun" side (and potentially a bit distracting) than the "elegant" side. Personally, I'd go more subtle with the "fun" elements, so they are a pleasant surprise when the guests sit down and look at things closely and see, for example, a figure hidden among the greenery/etc. But if you like it, it's perfect.

I do agree that there are a lot of different colored dice. But, for the most part, your wedding colors seem to be green, white and gold. So maybe just stick to green, white and gold dice (like you have in two of the vases)

Thank you, everyone!! I ended up spray painting half the dice a soft gold (to go with the terrariums), and the other half silver. I also contacted our caterer and our reception dishware will be that same soft gold and silver edged.
I love it when a plan comes together!
