Garter Toss

Are you all planning on a garter toss? Are they even a thing anymore?

My brother skipped his and I am replacing mine with an “anniversary dance.” The DJ will fall all the couples on the floor and after a minute he’ll say “now everyone who has been together 5 years or more stay on the dance floor.” Then increase the number of years until one couple remains. That last couple will get the toss bouquet and a bottle of sparkling cider with the garter wrapped on it. To celebrate love 💕

Most of the weddings I’ve been to still had them. My FH is still in the air about it. He didn’t like the way his brother did it at his wedding, and I guess it just gave him a bad vibe about the whole tradition, but I’d still think it would be fun. We have 4 months still to decide.

Some still do it. FH doesn't ask for much and he voiced his opinion on how weird he thinks it is so we're going to discard that portion. I didn't really care either which way. With him wanting to discard that, I think I might discard the bouquet toss as well just to make it even. It's all up to you though. If you end up not having one, you can always add something else to fill the time.

I’m personally not. The last thing I need is for my family/ and entire new family to watch my fiancé taking off my garter with his teeth. LOL that’s just crossing a line that I can’t do. Again this is just a totally personal thing for me. There’s nothing wrong with it if you choose to do it

We didn't even do a bouquet toss.

I bought a garter for fun, but I had no intention of wearing it under my dress.

You don't have to do any of these "traditions" unless you want to.

Most I've seen were fairly tasteful.. No groping or teeth involved. The majority on YouTube are very cringey though mimicking a stripper dance with hip thrusts and cracking the belt like a whip. Thankfully never seen those in person.

In the end, do whatever you and your future husband are comfortable with.

No. Not doing any of that stuff. Just a first dance and parents.... then open dancing and mingling for the rest of the night.

We skipped it. We felt that the garter toss tradition is somewhat sexist and we also skipped the bouquet toss for this same reason

In the last 10 years, I've only been to 1 wedding with it, so most people I know have cut it. Many still do the bouquet toss. I didn't do either. Instead, we did an anniversary dance and I gave my toss bouquet to the couple who has been married the longest. It's really up to you if you want to do it, skip it entirely, or replace it.

We’re not doing it or the bouquet toss. I’ve always found them extremely uncomfortable and awkward to watch. I haven’t seen anyone do it since the early 2000s, though. It’s majorly phasing out. I would not feel comfortable with it at all.

I find it to be a creepy, weird tradition. If there is significance or meaning in it for you, then by all means, you should go ahead and do it. If you can't think of a single reason of why you would do it other than "that's what everyone does," then I would reconsider and instead include activities that are meaningful to both of you.

We are skipping it since the majority of our guests are married or in long term relationships. You do what feels right for you!

I have seen it once at wedding a few years back, but not many people still do them. I wont be doing a garter or bouquet toss because we will only have like 3 single people at our wedding.
