Garden Party Attire for a Sunday Day Wedding?

StargazerLily24, on July 9, 2017 at 5:48 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

We decided to go with Garden Party attire for the wedding since it's a Sunday afternoon wedding.

Would it be bad if on the invitations we put worded it as

"Garden Party Attire, please no sneakers, jeans, or shorts"

I've been to several weddings where guests have shown up in Jeans, Sneakers or Shorts, and it just feels like people think Sunday day wedding, I don't really have to put effort into how I look.

Any suggestions on a way to word it without really stating it?

My wedding is a Sunday... I fully expect my adult attendees to dress appropriately without prompting.

Also, my invites will be formal, alluding to a formal wedding.

Dress codes on invites are not necessary unless you are hosting a true Black Tie affair.

You can also say Semi Formal which means dresses for women and suits for men.

Yes, it would be bad. You don't tell people how to dress. And dress codes don't go on the invite.

    Have an informal invite, describe the style in the invite;

"Join us for our ceremony at 3:00 followed by a garden party reception at 3:30 PM"

Your guests are going to show up in whatever they want, but it's not a reflection on you at all.

The only dress code that is acceptable on an invitation is Black Tie- because it imparts a lot of information- more than just the dress.

You simply don't tell your guests how to dress on an invitation.

The reality is that even if it were acceptable, the people who are going to wear jeans or shorts to a wedding aren't going to make different choice because the dress code says so.

@FutureMrsC. - You'd be shocked at how many adults don't know how to dress accordingly for events such as weddings.

@Celia - Thank you, I was looking mostly for a way to throw it in, without having to actually state it.

Don't put it on the invitations, but on your website you can state "garden party attire."

Will women be able to wear heels (are there paved areas or is it grass)? You might want to mention that (on the website).

@NancyT - Yes, they will be able to wear heels, the ceremony is outside on a paved area where there is a gazebo and then everything else will be inside. I guess I should create a wedding website then. LOL

Do it through word of mouth. I've told my FIL no jeans, sneakers or t-shirts because we're also having a Sunday daytime wedding and his family are super casual everywhere they go. They're spreading the word on his side.

Build a wedding website. You can inform your guest by adding an information card with your invite.
