Funny RSVP Wording - Creative or Confusing?

BeachBride2016, on July 25, 2016 at 3:50 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

I'm working on our invites and matching RSVP postcards. We are having our ceremony on the beach (behind the hotel) with a reception in the hotel's ballroom. I'd say it's a smart casual sort of dress code (guys in khakis and Tommy Bahama shirts are ok - suits not necessary, women in sundresses) so it's not super formal but not super casual. Our invites/rsvp post cards are beach themed with starfish and shells.

I'm exploring funny rsvp wording like "Yes, sunscreen is packed! Save us ___ beach chairs" and "Sorry, all tide up...must wave your invitation" and things along those lines (I have a long list of options going at the moment!). But, do you think guests would find these confusing to choose from? Is it better to just go the standard "Accepts" and "Declines" route?

Please don't, it's confusing and will probably not yield you the results you want.

Be straightforward on your RSVPs, trust me if you search what some of the people here have had happened when they have come back, you want them as user friendly as possible and not "cute".

I personally like cute rsvp like that. I don't like 3 or 4 different yes and no options.

Ditto Jessie. It sounds cute, yes, but may lead to more headaches than you'd think. Just do the standard accepts or declines type of thing.

Please tell me you're not putting a dress code on your invites though...

I also think it's cute, but agree with PP, I don't like the ones that have four or five options. It seems like overkill IMO.

    I put:

    _ Yes- Sunscreen is packed!

    _No- Sorry, all tide up.

I've had no problems with people understanding which option to pick. It went with my theme and everyone thought the invites turned out really cute.

I did none traditional and had no issues. Just keep it to two options.

@mna - No, no dress code info on the invite, of course! That was just to help you all get a feel for the formality of the wedding itself.

@Caroline - Yes, I think putting a distinct "yes" or "no" ahead of the funny sentence could help solve the confusion!

I agree its cute but could be super confusing... I agree with Caroline that you should do something like

___ Attending, and yes we'll bring our sunglasses!

___ Regrets, sorry we are all tide up!

As long as you put "yes" & "no" and then you cute sentence it should be good.

I agree with Christina. Give me a cute yes option or a cute no option and I'm good I just don't like when there are too many options.

I think it's cute, and with the distinct yes and no, you shouldn't have any confusion.

If you're going to do it, put the words "tide" and "wave" in quotations, or folks like me will think you don't know how to spell properly.

Eta I corrected my own spelling lol

I would make it VERY clear which option is which. People screw up very straightforward rsvp cards. We did very standard options and people still got confused.

My suggestion is to do the cutesy ones if you want to but put an obvious response in brackets at the end of the line (i.e., yes or no).

"Yes, sunscreen is packed! Save us ___ (number) beach chairs (Accept)"

and "Sorry, all tide up...must wave your invitation (Decline)"
