As someone who lived in Fort Lauderdale for 5 years, they are two COMPLETELY different cities. On a good day, they are about 30-40 minutes apart without traffic, and completely different "vibes".

In Fort Lauderdale, your main areas will be Las Olas Boulevard/Himmarshee areas as well as the 17th St/Harbordale areas as well as the beach.

In Miami, your main veins will probably be South Beach, Brickell, and Aventura. It also really depends on where you're trying to go and what you're trying to do!

    Hey,

Hopefully, I can help, I was born in raised in Miami and spend most of my adult life there until recently. I say visit both they are about 45 mins apart. Ft. Lauderdale is a little more relaxing. Miami is all about partying. Miami has a little more posher and famous restaurants. Both offer amazing seafood.

You can do anything including watersports, spa days, and fun restaurants. I've parasailed, jet skied, rented mini hummers, rented trikes, rented Trexes.

Ive had my first chocolate spa massage in Ft. Lauderdale. Ft. Lauderdale has great wine bars.

Great restaurants I've been to Epic and Area 31 in Brickell, Barton G ( really cool food presentations) in South Beach. Restaurants along Ocean Drive where you can just stop and grab a seat ( very expensive, if price isn't listed ASK). Mangos has a live show and food ( FUN).

Miami is very touristy. Most Miami locals try to Ft. Lauderdale for entertainment. Less traffic, and less expensive. Ft. Lauderdale has better and more bars. Las Olas Boulevard is the best area for entertainment. Hollywood Beach for bike rentals and relaxing beach days.
