im trying to figure out what kind of cake i want. the actual frosting is supposed to taste better than fondant but there isnt as much that can be done with it. fondant is MUCH prettier, costs a bit more, and may taste icky what do you all suggest

At first I was thinking of doing fondant b/c I heard buttercream wouldn't hold up well. But now I think I'm changing my mind after hearing how fondant is kind of yucky. I definetly want to eat and enjoy cake even if my FH has to remind me to sit down and eat cake for a minute. LOL! And buttercream is cheaper too and we dont have a lot of money to spend.

Our cake lady charges twice as much per person for fondant than she does butter cream. Fondant will hold up if you are having an out door reception, it tastes like paste. We are having a fondant monogram on our cake as decoration

Hmmm im begenning to lean more toward the fondant *again* Fondant-wont turn teeth color!! has 2 layers of frosing so guests cah "choose" what they get, its is much prettier!! the lady i have talked to only charges a dollar more a slice it holds up well outside some dont taste the best in the world.

frosting-dont look as smooth/pretty, lady wouldnt let us taste only offers "old lady" style cakes its more messy for when we "feed' eachother the cakeSmiley smile

I went back and forth too and ended up opting for fondant. I think most bakers put a layer of buttercream underneath the fondant so it sticks to the cake. People can peel off the fondant if they don't want to eat it and still have buttercream. I personally don't mind the taste of fondant - it's kinda like a bland tootsie roll!

I have had fondant and don't care for it. I have also worked with it as well and while it makes a beautiful presentation, the taste...even with the icing underneath did nothing for me. I will be doing american buttercream with a smooth finish.

FONDANT LOOKS GREAT BUT IT REALY TAST BAD. MY MOTHER MAKES CAKES AND SHE USES FROSTING AND THERE IS A TON YOU CAN DO WITH IT. I AM GOING WITH FROSTING ON OUR CAKE. IF YOU FIND A GOOD CAKE MAKER THEY CAN MAKE FROSTING ALMOST AS SMOOTH AS FONDANT. ANOTHER THING IS I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE USE FONDANT AND THEN TAKE IT OF AND SMEAR A LITTLE FROSTING WHEN THEY SERVE IT. IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU WANT.

This may seem weird. But you seem to want something pretty, and you said you are not worried about the tastes. Have you though of having "the cake" be made with fake cake layers and just have sheet cakes with butter cream in the back? I know it seems odd, but this way you get the pretty cake for pictures but your guests get to eat a delicious cake for dessert.

I had buttercream at my wedding but was at a wedding last month that had fondant and decided to try it just to see what it was like. The taste wasn't all bad and looking around it seemed that about half the guest ate it and half just ate the cake. I know a lot of people who won't eat the icing no matter what it is because they think it adds too much sweetness.

Buttercream definitely tastes better, but are you doing it yourself or using a baker? im making my own cakes, cuz i dont wanna spend a few hundred on a cake. lol. im making a ganache sort of frosting, but better. it takes (literally) about 2 minutes to make the frosting, then when its done you let it cool for a minute or two, and pour it over the cake. it hardens on the cake and leaves a BEAUTIFUL SHINY frosting, which is smooth and pretty as fondant, but tastes even better than buttercream! if you dont want chocolate then ignore everything i said though. lol

And melissa had a good point. LOTS of professional bakers do exactly that. cardboard cakes that look pretty. and then the real one in the back so no one sees it
