frosting vs. fondant

Sheila, on September 29, 2009 at 5:11 PM Posted in Planning 0 42

Im trying to figure out what kind of cake i want. the actual frosting is supposed to taste better than fondant but there isnt as much that can be done with it. fondant is MUCH prettier, costs a bit more, and may taste icky what do you all suggest

I've never actually tased a wedding cake with the fondant, so what I am going to do is for my cake tasting have both frosting (butter cream and cream cheese) and the fondant to see which we like better and go from there. The fondant does look nicer sometimes, but if the taste isn't there the extra money is not worth it to me.

I actually like the fondant... after everyone said how horrible it was, I expected it to taste like poo....

It is much prettier, but definitely not as good as buttercream.

We had cupcakes at our wedding, so that wasn't really an option for us anyways.

A great bakery can take a butter cream frosting & make it look almost like fondant. Fondant is not very sweet, & most people here in the US don't like it. It is very popular in Europe where they use it a lot. My bakery for my wedding was able to make the butter cream look like fondant. I wouldn't have known if I hadn't tasted it! Ask the bakery...if they can't do it, keep asking bakeries until you find one that can. Best of luck with your wedding plans!

Buttercream definitely!! My cake was so gorgeous. They did all buttercream frosting, but then some flowers made of fondent. I would say tasting good is what matters the most.

The cake i want requires fondent to make it look as nice as it does in the picture (in my inspiration boards) but ive also got some alternative cake choices with actual frosting if the fondent cake is out of our budget. i wont be eating much of it anyway so it doesnt matter to me, i just want it to look pretty.

Hopefully i can find a place that actually lets us TASTE what they have..the lady we went to didnt let us taste and all the pictures she had were not our style of cakes. they looked like they came from 1922. and its hard to find a place that is open on weekends so the FH can go with me, he lives an hour away and is going to schoolSmiley sad

I think the fondant thing is a bit much. Made popular by cable shows like "Ace of Cakes" and "Last Cake Standing". I've tasted it before and it's like eating a Necco Wafer (old candy invented in the 1800s) but softer. So try one and you'll know what fondant tastes like. From my whirlwind cake tasting experience, I tend to prefer the cakes that were butter cream frosting. We ended up ordering one small cake w/ the fondant mostly for the decorative, photo aspect and the rest are cupcakes w/ lots of butter cream frosting.

Lol Heather, ok hon, YOU might not eat it but your guests will, might want to think about that also Smiley smile Be a shame to have a beautiful cake but have it throwed away by your guests because it didn't taste good Smiley smile

Are you speaking about a location in IL or OH? In OH, did you visit Diblasi Bakery in Chardon? I am getting cupcakes and considered this Bakery. The price for cupcakes seemed reasonable. I decided on a place that specializes in cupcakes. I saw some pictures of their wedding cakes. They are very nice. I did not actually taste them though.

Also find out if they charge you a labor fee for the design. Fondant not only increases the price per serving, but based on the difficulty of the design some bakers add an hourly labor charge for fondant cakes.

Your bakery should let you taste test....keep looking for another bakery!!!! I'm still waiting for my photos or I'd be happy to share a photo of my fondant looking buttercream frosting!

Nobody really eats the cake anyway, ive been to quite a few weddings where theres a beautiful cake and nobody eats it, half of it gets thrown out anyway. well at least thats how it is here. im not too worried about people liking the cake or not, its not number 1 on my list.

He 2 places we have called about 1 does only buttercream and i wasnt thrilled with her work AT ALL!! like i said before it all looked like it came from 1922. but she only charges 1.00 a slice regardless of time or decoretions.also didnt allow us to taste test. the other lady only does fondant and she charges 2.00 a slice regardless of time and decorations... we still have LOADS of time to think about it. im just afraid we wont get what we want.

We are having fondant over buttercream lol. Our baker is amazing and said that people can simply pull the fondant off if we want. At first we were only going to have buttercream but when she saw the colour we wanted for the cake (a deep blue) she said that the buttercream with that much dye in it would turn people teeth blue so fondant it was. She was also nice enough because she told us the fondant would be better after giving us a quote she is doing the fondant for free.

Haha its about half and half...after hearing the fondant can be picked off that sounds like a better deal to me...and it would be less messy than the frosting...HMMMMM thsnk you ladies!! i love having opinions other than family!!!!
