If one of your friends were getting married on your birthday would you go? It’s a little bit of a long story. So she was originally supposed to be getting married in May, then moved it due to covid and now it’s on my birthday. I usually wouldn’t care because birthdays for the most part have been awful for me but my fiancé wanted to change that and already planned out this weekend getaway for us and it’s been planned well before she changed her date. She’s a good friend, I’m not sure how to proceed.

Edit: for context, I’m not in the wedding because they decided they aren’t having bridesmaids or groomsmen. She’s having her sister as her maid of honor and he’s having his brother as his best man and that’s it. But she will be a bridesmaid in my wedding next year.

Have you talked to your friend how she might feel about it? If my close friend came to me and explained a situation like this, I wouldn’t want her and her fh to lose that money. Maybe reach out to her and gauge how she’d feel about you missing the wedding? She might be more understanding since it’s been rescheduled.

I've had 3 people get married on my birthday. The first time it happened (1993) I was not too upset because I was not in the wedding, so I just sent a card. The second time it happened (2004) she asked to be in the wedding. When she told me the date, I bowed letting her know I already made plans to be in Mexico that weekend. The last time it happened (2010) I went and vowed to never attend another wedding on my birthday.

I’d definitely attend my good friend’s wedding over a birthday.

I would attend the wedding, unless its not possible to reschedule the weekend getaway. For her its a special day that already had to be rescheduled due to covid. If she is to be in your BP in the future I'm certain you guys have a close relationship and would love to keep it that way, and I think your showing support on her special day would mean a lot to her.

How involved were his plans? Is there any way to do both? I think skipping the wedding depends on how hard it would be to change your fiancés plans. Weddings are usually considered to be a bigger deal than birthday plans. So I can understand why a friend who is the bride might feel hurt. But the fact that you aren’t sure how to feel about it sounds like the wedding isn’t necessarily as important to you as spending your birthday with your fiancé. Being a true friend goes both ways. She might feel especially hurt because she is a true friend and would cancel birthday plans to go to your wedding. It’s all a matter of perspective. You’ll have other birthdays but she’ll only have one wedding. So I dunno. Depends on what really matters most to both of you and your friendship.

Also going to a wedding on your birthday might actually be a fun way to celebrate a birthday.

The only times a birthday takes precedence over a wedding is if others have planned a big party, food and venue etc for a special one. Or if unchangeable plans have been made before knowing the wedding date. Then, go away if you want, and don't feel guilty. Contrary to popular feeling on WW, a wedding day is not the most important day in someone's life. And guests often have several competing things on a given date. Missing a wedding is common, even among close friends, or family, for prior committments.
