Our photographer is a friend of ours and I'm very excited about it! But I want her to be able to enjoy the night and not just work the entire time. She'll do all the normal pictures before/during the ceremony, but I want her to be able to spend some time at the reception just being a guest. I'm sure other people will be taking pictures throughout the night anyway, and that we could work out the important things that I would definitely want her to get.

Anyone have a similar situation? Did it matter that you didn't have a photographer the whole night?

It's a risk, but my FH and I hired a friend of his as our wedding photographer. She is a professional, and her father is her second shooter. We also used another friend of FH's for our engagement photos. The photos turned out incredible, and I couldn't be happier. You run the risk of not liking the photos, or the friend wanting to take more pictures of the guests they know than of the bridal party. However, if they're your friend, they're going to try and do the best job they can for you. I am meeting with the photographer at our ceremony/reception site prior to the wedding to let her know where we want certain pictures, and where to focus. Our on-site coordinator has also agreed to meet with her to let her know where to get the best pictures. With a professional, you would have to pay even more for this extra time. There are pluses and minuses, but so far, having a friend as the photographer has worked out great. Good luck!
