Four days to go and I hate my venue

Cavan, on January 17, 2012 at 10:24 AM Posted in Planning 0 12

Seeing as I have only 4 days until my wedding I'm allowed one freak out. And I've decided this is it.

I just received an email from the catering manager at our venue telling us that the rehearsal we had planned for this Friday has to be cancelled as no one will be there. Really? Didn't we already make all these arrangements? They did suggest Thursday night but I've sent the invitations to everyone already (of course, as it's in THREE days!). It's not like the wedding party all lives in this city either. My sisters plane doesn't get in until Thursday night and we had planned a large family gathering on that night for all the guests that flew in and are staying in hotels.

And.....apparently he's having surgery on his shoulder tomorrow and will probably not be there for the wedding this Saturday. So, I've made all my plans with him and arranged everything I wanted and he's not going to be there to do it? Luckily I have a day-of coordinator that I will be relying heavily on.

I would see what your contract says. That is crazy they have to cancel 3 days prior. I've never heard of this before and would be irate as well. Best of luck and let us know how it turns out!

I just went through the contract and there is nothing in it about a rehearsal. In the information packet I have it says that we receive a "half hour rehearsal scheduled prior to the wedding day (based on availability)" but nothing in the contract. I think there is nothing for me to do but review the venue and tell others to get the rehearsal put into the contract. It sucks but I don't know what else I can do.

Oh wow. I agree with Crystal and Kristin - read over your contract and see what it says. I completely understand that life happens, and the man has to take care of himself....but he should definitely have a backup plan and somebody to fill in for him.

That's ridiculous. You PAID for that rehearsal, somebody BETTER be available. I'm sure he knew he was having surgery on his shoulder WELL before 3 days before your wedding. I would not be happy at all and I would most certainly let him know.

I have to admit I kinda knew this would happen. When I emailed them in November for a rehearsal date no one emailed me back, when my FH called in December no one returned his call. We finally sat down with him on the first week of January and we decided on the Friday before the wedding (aren't most rehearsals the day before?). I guess it was a firm date in our eyes but not in his. I'm just ticked off but I have to say I am not surprised.

This is when to really rely on your Day Of Coordinator. Part of what they are there for is to handle last minute issues and emergencies especially with other vendors!

I think that's crazy that they cancelled it! If I were you I would meet somewhere with the day-of coordinator and everyone else participating in the rehearsal and try to go over everything there. I guess it would be better than not rehearsing anything at all right?

Totally call that DOC. Let them know what's up and that you're freaking out. Maybe he/she can get with the venue mgr and get him to hand over the keys to her for an hour or so for the rehearsal.

DOC's can do pretty amazing things. One time I was in a wedding on the Queen Mary ship in CA, and the Queen Mary staff doubled booked our rehearsal space which caused a MOB showdown on deck. They also forgot to tell the bride that there was going to be a heavy metal music fest next door to the deck where she was having the outdoor ceremony. Smiley smile We woke up at 10am to a really bad cover of "Down with the Sickness."

The ship staff wouldn't do diddly squat, but this magical DOC showed up with the flowers and whipped out a headset, and convinced the festival producer to take the bands off stage during ceremony time. Then the Queen Mary staff basically comped her entire wedding, and our hotel rooms. Woot!

I gotta tell ya Cavan, I'm impressed if this is your meltdown. I'd be a raging effing lunatic. So what's plan B and do you need to reherse the ceremony? Do you need any of us to help find you a rehersal dinner location? We can do research for you and send you places to check out... How can we help?

Well, thank god you have a DOC!! If you absolutely cannot get a rehearsal time, gather your bridal party and family and readers, etc and just do one yourselves. Let everyone know where to stand, when to read, etc, and write it all down (with ridiculously detailed notes). When your officiant shows up your DOC can hand him/her a copy and go over it with him/her. And take it from someone who's ceremony did NOT go as planned... it will be ok!! It will annoy you, but everyone else will say it was a beautiful ceremony. Smiley smile

    Good luck!!
