Found a ton of items on our wedding registry that we didn't put but guests purchased. What to do?

Private User, on June 24, 2016 at 7:39 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

My bridal shower is this Saturday. Wedding is in August. While doing some last-minute registry updates (Bed, Bath, and Beyond) I found a TON of stuff that we never put on there. Lots of candy, lip balm (that I personally hate), and random Dora the Explora items. Even worse, guests actually PURCHASED this stuff! Out of 200 items and only 20 stuff purchased so far, all of these random stuff was bought.

I'm so embarrassed and have no idea what I'm going to say/do when I receive this stuff as gifts. How would I handle this situation appropriately without offending them? I was thinking of posting on my Facebook about the embarrassing mistake. What would be the appropriate way to correct this?

UPDATE: I spoke with my fiancé about this. He had gone a separate time from me and took 5-year-old daughter with him. He had let her use the scanning gun and there is a possibility she might've scanned some of these items when he wasn't looking (which explains for the candy and Dora items),

Does anyone have access to your registry where they could've added things?

The only action you could take now is to remove the items so no more of them are purchased. You can return them to BBB once received but you do not put the onus on your guests to correct this.

They will all probably have gift receipts for you to return them. Just be thankful even though it's not at all what you wanted

I could be wrong, but I think BBB adds stuff people purchase for you to your list and it says 0 requested 1 received or something like that. With the things you're describing I feel like someone probably bought something for your registry for you and that stuff for themselves and there was a mix up and it was marked as something purchased for you.

Even if that's not the case graciously accept the gifts and say thank you then quietly return them. Do not post on Facebook.

ETA I hope that made sense

I have seen this on here before--it seems that sometimes if the purchase bought other items, they appear on the registry. Particularly with BBB.

No need to post on FB Smiley smile

I am pretty sure that a customer's entire purchase can show up on your registry. Hopefully you have a guest with a child who likes Dora the Explorer and they bought them something the same time they bought your gift.

Oh goodness sounds like your daughter will enjoy your bridal shower lol. I can't believe that people actually purchased those items though! Maybe you can return them with a gift receipt

I have to admit a laughed a little after reading your update! Kids are so silly! But I really hope you can exchange these for the items you really want/need.

I am surprised people actually purchased those items though. I think I would be like that's odd, gift card it is!

Oh my, this both hilarious but also a little mortifying/frustrating. I would just make sure to have your FH open all the Dora gifts and display them on his desk at work as punishment Smiley winking

I had stuff added to my BBB registry, random things that clearly were not gifts, 20 oz sodas, everyday shower gel, candles, etc. The cashier had rung up someone's whole purchase as part of my registry, I was kind of embarrassed until I realized that was what happened.

They did show up as 0 requested, 1 purchased. If FH's daughter had gone crazy with the scanning gun it should show up as 1 requested, 1 purchased so at least you can tell what happened.

As PPs have stated, when a customer buys something, and part of it is a registry item, the rest of the transaction can show up - as 0 requested 1 purchased. I had the same thing with a shower curtain and a fruit fly trap ... was updating the registry and couldn't figure out why I would have put those on there, or why someone would have bought them for me. Then I saw the requested/purchased part and realized it must have just been someone's extra purchases that accidentally got added. My shower came and went and I did not get an ugly shower curtain or a fruit fly trap! I think you'd be safe unless it shows a number for the requested part! Then remove them right away! Smiley smile

If they were purchased but not added by you, that just means that someone bought those items along with a gift from your registry in the same transaction. The extra items may not be for you, and the purchaser is probably not aware that the appeared on your registry. BBB uses the registry like a gift receipt, which I think is why they add other items purchased in the same transaction.

I don't have a great deal of suggestions about how to handle the gifts you didn't want, but I admit, I laughed my head off when I heard how the 5 year old must have registered you for this stuff!

Thing go in unplanned directions when it comes to weddings no matter what you do-

this is one thing that is going to make for a heck of a story! I'd get a print out of what the 5 year old registered you for and keep it in a scrapbook to show her when she gets older!

This happened to me. As others mentioned, I'm 99% sure it was from other people purchasing their own items while also purchasing our gift. We had coffee k-cups and a sponge added to ours. It appeared on our registry like PPs said "0 requested 1 purchased" I just took it off the registry.

Look at what yours says on your registry. If it says 0 requested, it was just a mix up! No worries!
