for those having someone close marry them, how did you ask your officiant?

Curious what other people didSmiley smile

also still wondering about that comment about it being frowned upon in the US. different laws, I guess?

my cousin is like a little brother to me..he's a great public speaker, bilingual and studying law so he was our first and only choice. we asked him unofficially first and then when he started to forget, BAM! we surprised him.Smiley smile

we invited him and his brother with their GF's over for dinner and when he came in we had dollar store battery candles lining the hallway with those awful fake rose petals... the stime of my life duet from dirty dancing playing. we were waiting for him with a giant fake ring.

his brother filmed it and we all thought it was funny.Smiley smile

looking forward to hearing your stories!

Well, mine is very boring then. I just called my youth pastor up and told her we'd be honored if she would consider marrying us. She said she would love to!

Proposing to your officiant? i think that's very bazaar lol. i picked up the phone and called to ask questions about pricing and ceremony styles and we are meeting for lunch in a week or so to go over everything and give her a deposit.

I just walked up to my pastor and said "Hey, even though you're retiring will you marry us?" Then there was some playful banter about how we don't want interim pastors telling us how to get married.

FH's dad is a minister, the first time we saw FH's parents after announcing our engagement we asked him if he would do us the honor and officiate our ceremony, FFIL got a huge grin on his face and agreed. Since then he's been making fake "dearly beloved" speeches at us and teasing us about our "non-conventional" ways.

This trend of 'proposing' to people in a wedding party really needs to end.

I agree with Emmy. No one has ever proposed to me except my ex....

I think this would terrify me, honestly.

Our officiant is a friend we both met at school, he's a pastor so we told him he was going to do our wedding! We are all close friends so he assumed we'd ask! He's so funny and a wonderful addition to our day!

Our friend officiant pastor man offered. He just commented on our engagement announcement on Facebook like "if you need someone to marry you, let me know!"

You should hear grooms stutter, "Uh, I was wondering if you'd marry me? To my fiancee!"

I asked a co-worker who was an experienced stage actor and legally authorized by the State of Florida to marry us. I knew he would not get stage fright and I wrote our ceremony like a script.

My cousin is ordained and an excellent public speaker and quick on his feet. He knows us well and we aren't religious so I asked him to marry us. He was touched that we asked. Our ceremony is only immediate family so I don't have any reservations. If I were having a big wedding, I'd hire an officiant just in case he felt funny about a big public one. Nothing special about my story, but I love having someone who knows us so well being involved.

My choir director from college (who is also a professor and very experienced in public speaking) is officiating for us. We just took him out to dinner and asked.

I asked my friend who is a Lutheran Pastor to be a bridesmaid. He said he'd rather be the Pastor instead.
