Food!

Jacinta, on May 10, 2016 at 5:44 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

My FH thinks we should skip dinner because it's too expensive. Our guest list is 250-all family, all coming- we are paying for the entire wedding ourselves. We have cake and smores as a favor, goes with our fire pit. But people need food right?! I think a taco bar is a fun and probably less expensive way than a sit down dinner to feed everyone but he says it's tacky. Any thoughts or ideas on cheaper dinner? Is a taco bar really tacky for an outdoor wedding? Help!

Unless you have your wedding at a non-typical dinner time, you must have food and drinks. Italian and BBQ are good alternatives. A taco bar by itself won't be enough food.

A taco bar sounds good! Not tacky. It is definitely tacky to not feed your guests, cut some other things out to fit into the food budget.

Some brides have had taco bars/fajita bars and they looked delicious! Just make sure your caterer has options for a variety to vegetarians and meat eaters Smiley smile

Tacos might be tacky, depending on how formal your wedding is. They wouldn't be tacky for a more casual wedding. People do need food, unless you are having it at a non-meal time then you probably could get away with just appetizers or something.

I agree Italian might be an affordable way to go.

    Taco bar, bbq, pasta stations...

If you have a group that large and at certain times, food is necessary.

I'd say it really depends on your time. A taco bar or fajita bar is perfectly great! But not at 6 pm or another typical dinner time.

Yes, people definitely need to be fed! A taco bar would be right up my alley lol. BBQ is also a nice choice if you're looking for something a little less formal and outdoors!

One of our favorite weddings ever was friends that had their wedding at a campsite near a local lake & had a full taco buffet ordered from their favorite Mexican restaurant. It wasn't tacky at all, in fact, it was delicious. And so fun. Yes, you must feed people if you're wedding corresponds with a meal time. Even (especially IMO) family. Tell FH we all said so.

You definitely need to feed people if you're having your wedding during dinner time! You can serve whatever type of food you want!

Taco bar sounds fun! Definitely feed your guests. They are coming out of their way to celebrate with you and some will bring cards/gifts. They deserve to be fed. Smiley smile

Feed them. Tacos are amazing. Not feeding your guests is tacky.

Tacos are fun! Have your wedding at 2, be done by 5 and you can cut your food costs by not serving a full meal. Make sure you tell people though, so they don't come hungry.

Tacos by themselves is not enough food just be sure to include rice, beans, corn, etc. so it's a full meal and you're good to go. Your guest list is huge, so you may consider cutting it down (though if it's all family as you say, that may get difficult).

Ps. Tell your FH tacky would be not feeding your guests.

Is he thinking you can invite 250 guests for cake and somemores? At dinner time?

    No.

For starters, most of the couples here pay for all or part of their weddings themselves; you need to choose the menu and guest list you can afford and go from there. If it's dinner time, you need to feed them dinner, and while everyone seems to love tacos, just tacos is not enough.

Cut that list if you can't afford it. Don't forget you still have to plan on beverages, seating, tableware, etc.

I think tacos are fine, if your wedding is casual. Be sure to include sides such as chips, guac, queso, beans, rice, salad, several choices of meat and include grilled peppers as well as onions. Toppings such as cilantro, cheese, and sour cream are a must as well.

Bailey - in all sincerity, I don't see how a pasta bar is less messy than a taco bar. In fact, the tortillas generally do a pretty good job of containing the filling unless they are overstuffed.

Are you serving a pasta that has less opportunity to drop or splatter?

Did someone say Tacos! Enough said! I love tacos.... As long as it's done nicely I don't think it's tacky at all.

Yes, you need to feed your guests. Italian food, BBQ, and Tacos are all cost-effective buffet options.

Honestly, if you are actually considering no food then you need to seriously cut your guest list down from 250 in order to afford to feed them!

We just went to a wedding and the reception was backyard and a taco bar. It was the bomb.com.
