Food trucks as your caters? Thoughts?

Rebecca, on May 3, 2017 at 8:45 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

A friend was talking about and given my obsession with food trucks I'm looking into because it sounds fun. What would be a good venue for it? A park?

Sounds like a great idea to me! Just be sure to have a Plan B for rainy weather.

I used to wanna do a food truck wedding but the logistics would be a nightmare for me--Wait time for guests to get food, lines, running out of popular items, guests being done before others and those waiting being bored, rain.

My parents went to a wedding where they had a food truck. There was 150 people and one truck. People were waiting in line all night. My parents never did get to eat. I think it's a great idea in theory but very hard to execute. I have seen food trucks as a late night snack thing, which is pretty cool!

My guest list is only 80 but I was thinking of hiring two food trucks and the having a small table of appetizers or some waiters walking around with some snacks for people in line. I don't want people waiting all night. I have a bunch of server friends from old jobs

I think they're a very cool trend for later in the evening, after dinner has been served and the party is in full swing. As far as using them as the main meal caterer, like several PPs, I'd be concerned about the number of trucks you'd need to have to quickly serve your guests without having lines develop, and I'm not a huge fan of food truck offerings being the main meal.

But later in the evening, as a party offering, I think it sounds like a real treat.

I think it all depends on the size of your guest list. If you are having a guest list of 50 or below I think it would be a fantastic idea. We are having a food truck but we are having 32 guest at most.

Also you don't have to have it in a park. It could be a home maybe with a huge back yard with easy back yard access. Our venue has a wrap around drive through that goes around the whole front yard and to the back yard. Also like a wedding barn venue would work.

If you have a large guest list maybe a evening truck for a late night snack or dessert. Something that wouldn't take 10 or more minutes to get out to each guest.

I attended a wedding last fall that had a taco truck and the food was amazing! They handed out tickets to each guest with an assigned time to eat over a two hour period. While this avoided the long line of guests at the truck, the times were handed out at random so I didn't get to eat with all of my immediate family and it was awkward that everyone was eating at different times.

I do agree with PPs, late night snack from a food truck sounds amazing!

Our wedding is on the formal side - so We hired a food truck for the rehearsal. We're having a luncheon at a park pavilion.

But I've heard good things about food trucks for the wedding too. Just depends on the vibe you want.

No. As a final snack? Fine. As your main meal?? No way.

I think that food trucks can be an awesome idea! That being said, I think it only really works for smaller weddings (i.e. under 50-60 people). Any more than that, and I can imagine lines being a huge issue.

I have heard of a few food trucks that also act as a catering company, more using their truck for food prep and then serving either a buffet or plated dinner. So that could be an option to look into as well.

We are having a kind more formal wedding but having a food truck at our RD. It's a local restaurant's food truck and it's my absolute favorite. So I'm pretty excited

    Yes.

I'm doing them. I'm having 3 for 130 people with a limited menu and they will start firing as soon as dinner starts. It's 3 very different trucks with lots of vegetarian options. I'm doing this in addition to a more traditional cocktail hour.

And I'll let you know how it goes in about 2 weeks!

Hi Rebecca, I like food trucks in theory but in reality your guests would be trekking around possibly carrying multiple plates and that can be annoying. I think it works best as a snack or for rehearsal dinner like pp said. I considered having an ice cream truck come at dessert time, that's another option!
