Food Truck Wedding Help

Lindsay, on May 6, 2020 at 11:17 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 18
Hello all,

I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during these crazy times! My fiancé and I booked our wedding venue and want to have food trucks as our food experience. We are looking at about 150 people, but likely closer to 120-130. We will have two different food trucks with a 2-3 options at each. I have always had my heart set on a food truck wedding, and the venue we fell in love with allows them. I do have a few questions though. Any help or experience is appreciated!
1.) I want to have the table setting with Bamboo plates since we are going for a more relaxed feel- how does this work? Would the guests take their plates up to the truck? Would it be better to give the truck the plates (I want them to be the same and look nicer than regular paper plates so I’m okay with providing these) and just have the table setting with a napkin and “menu”? I just feel the plates would give a nicer feel/look but am unsure how that would work.
2.) any tips on how I can ensure my guests aren’t waiting too long to eat? Did you have servers help bring food for elderly guests?
3.) any other tips or pointers on this subject?
Thanks all!

We did not have a food truck, but I have been to a wedding that did. I would provide the food truck with the plates. For your table settings, you can have your flatware, napkins, and a charger. You won't need a menu because they won't be ordering from the food truck. The truck will likely already need your orders ahead of time.

I would either have servers serve everyone to prevent a line, or call up tables by number/name to prevent a back up at the truck. If you are going to provide your guests with dish options, you will need to come up with a way to note that so they get the correct meal (on their place card would be the easiest).

I've only been to one "food truck wedding" and it didn't go well. The wait times were so long (there were 2 trucks for about 150 people). If the trucks will be making food to order the way they usually operate then they just can't keep up with that many people who are hungry all at the same time.

As a wedding guest, if I am going to be standing in line for food during the reception, I would much prefer to just wait in line at the buffet table where the food is already made and waiting to be put on my plate. But then I don't see how this any different than any other caterer.

If you want the bamboo plates, let the food trucks know you want them used instead of regular plates. Using the same plate for multiple trips (as in a buffet) is a health code violation for eating in public. Guests will not be happy having to take their plates from the table because your foodtrucks need them to serve. It's going to create mass chaos unless the food trucks already have the plates in their possession.
Food trucks cater 365 days of the year during limited time frames so they have this down to a science keeping lines short. They are professionals for a reason.
You can hire party staff to cover as servers for elderly/disabled as long as guests are made clear what their food options are before it's served.
Trust them. They know what they're doing.

Good point about the health code violation. I think you're right-- best bet would be to provide the trucks with them and just have the table setting without plates.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the info. Do you know if the food truck wedding you went to had food trucks with items pre prepped or were they made to order?

Something for me to keep in mind while planning, thanks!

I don't honestly know. I just know that we stood in line for over an hour waiting for food. It definitely made that reception memorable in not a good way.

My brother and SIL used food trucks at their wedding. They had trucks/stands like specialty French fries, sliders etc for the cocktail hour, and a fancy wood-fired pizza truck for the dinner. I think something like pizza probably moves more quickly than other more individual kinds of foods. People didn’t really need to order, but rather grabbed slices of what they wanted as the truck put them out. We didn’t have any issues with waiting around for food, and it was 100+ guests.

Love it! Pizza is a great idea, especially as you pointed out it wouldn't be individual orders.

    Thank you! Smiley smile

I feel like food trucks would be even slower than a buffet. Even with 4 trucks for 100 guests, I’d be annoyed. Maybe part food trucks, part buffet? Like maybe a salad buffet and the main proteins from trucks?

Hi! We are having a wood fired pizza truck at our wedding and I think food trucks are such a fun and cool idea. We are supplying the truck with our own plates because we want the aesthetic to be adhered to and will just do the chargers and napkins and flatware on the tables so there's still something there. My caterer said that it will a continuous stream of pizza for two hours and that they will begin while the ceremony is underway so there's hot and ready pizza waiting for guests once it's time. We will also have a grazing table for cocktail hour to hold guests over as well.

I like that idea. We are kind of thinking about doing something along those lines now.

Thanks for your input. I know I personally hate waiting for food, so we are recosidering.

So funny Taylor! This is kind of what we came up with as an alternative to ensure that the food is following and ready all at once as opposed to individual orders. I was recommended a nice wood fire pizza place that even offers passed apps during cocktail hour while they are getting everything finished up, so we are leaning towards doing that with a late night food truck, since having a food truck has always been my dream!

    Congrats by the way!

You’re welcome. I think food trucks sound fun but waiting too long would destroy the experience for guests.

It's honestly such a good idea, and who doesn't love pizza? I think our caterer had the option of hand passed hors d'oeuvres as well which is super helpful. Congrats to you as well Smiley heart

I am also considering a food truck for my wedding in March 2021, and so much on this thread was so helpful!

We've ultimately decided not to go with a food truck. The one we wanted has been close to impossible to get a hold of, and our options were much more going with a buffet style! We wanted casual either way, so at least casual is what ultimately wins. I hope that helps! What have you decided?
