Food favors - is it ok?

Gabby, on December 11, 2019 at 10:34 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 37
Okay, so my fiancé and I are thinking about doing food as a favor at our reception. Our venue offers the ability to send guests off with different little goodies and the one we really like is soft pretzels with different toppings you can add yourself. I think that this is something that is creative and cute, it’s an easy option because it can be offered to all guests as they are leaving the event. We were even thinking putting a little sign saying “Thanks for celebrating us tie the knot” or something similar.

The problem: people are telling me that soft pretzels aren’t something that everyone likes and it might not be vegan so some guests may not eat it. I’m a little worried because I want an easy and money-friendly favor for all guests but is this the wrong idea? Is food in general a bad idea? I think people are expecting me to give out sunglasses, cups/drink ware, picture frames, etc. with our date on it and I just don’t really agree since eventually those type of things become dust collectors. Am I wrong? Help!

Food is generally a great idea! People much rather have edible favors than some random stuff like wine glasses etc.

I think the idea is really cute!

I am sorry but I would rather an edible gift then a gift I may throw out apart from like a glass or something. I would do like chocolates because most people like that. If they do not then they can pass to someone else. Maybe do like a shot glass or mason jar with hershey kisses in them?

I think no matter what you go with some people won't like it.

I love the pretzel idea! That's super cute and memorable.

If you're aware of anyone on the guest list who can't eat a pretzel, you can always substitute their favour for something else.

My fiance and I are thinking of giving out little bags of coffee grounds that say "grounds for celebration" on them.

We know that not everyone there will be coffee-drinkers, but we're both coffee fanatics so it's personal to us and it's cute and memorable. It'll also save us some $$ because we can make them ourselves Smiley smile

I remember the favours that I was given at weddings, but I certainly have never used them!

Food is definitely a good idea for favors and you're absolutely right in saying that personalized non-edible favors generally end up collecting dust (or in the trash!). The truth is, there will always be SOME guests who don't take/eat whatever the favors may be, so I wouldn't stress over that. I think the pretzel idea is awesome and I would love this as a wedding guest!

I would do food. From my experience wedding favors get thrown away.

Agreeing with PPs. Food (in my opinion) is THE best favor! I typically always leave the tangible items (sorry Karen, but I don’t want soap with your initials carved into it) but I will always take the food. For this reason, we’re having a s’more favor set up for our guests. Keep the pretzels!

An edible favor is always best. If someone doesn’t eat pretzels, that’s OK. Some people don’t even eat the cake.

I think this is such a cute idea! especially with your saying. are there many vegans attending your wedding? i wouldn't worry too much about that - but talk to your venue, maybe they can accommodate you

You don't *have* to do a favor. Smiley smile But if you do, as PPs mentioned, food is a great option! I'm planning on doing little honey jars.

No one is expecting sunglasses, cups/drink ware, picture frames, etc. with your date on it; most of that type of stuff gets tossed.

    The pretzels sound great!

Of all the favors to do, I think edible (or drinkable) gifts are generally the best. I think your idea is cute!

My FH and I are doing food favors. We're having a dessert bar during the reception and the dessert bar will have to-go boxes with our names and wedding date on them for guests to take things home with them.

We decided on food favors b/c we didn't want our guests to take something home they would trash not long after the wedding. Also, my FSIL's and I will be making the desserts for the dessert bar so we are saving money there.

You can't please everybody, honestly. You're already hosting everyone for a very fancy dinner party! If you want to give soft pretzels, give soft pretzels.

I want to do the same thing - have something that is biodegradable as a favor. If you are using the wedding wire website to RSVP you can have people put their food preferences on their RSVP and accommodate their dietary redirections. If the venue doesn’t offer gluten free or vegan options you can always take the count you get on the RSVPs and specialty order them!

My father in-law works in catering and he always says, you make food for the majority. You never make food for that one person that’s gluten free etc. if majority of the people will eat it, do it. I think it’s a cute idea. Congrats and good luck!
