Follow up with your vendors!

This is a public service announcement. Make sure to follow up with your vendors at least once or twice, even if you don't have that much to say.

I sent the girl who is designing my custom invitations a note after NYE to check in and ask about the timeline and if she needs anything from me. I got back a very sweet (and infuriating) email saying that she is so sorry, but her company had decided to focus on wholesale and not do custom work anymore, so she can't do my invitations.

If I hadn't sent that email, it might have been months before she told me and too late to fix anything. This way, I have time to design the invitations myself, even though I'm annoyed about it. (Don't worry, I have a design background)

Okay, just wanted to pass that along! Hope it helps some of you avoid potential disaster.

    Good reminder. I keep telling myself I need to do call vendors this week. I have questions about details anyway.

    I also double check with my DOC/VC every now and then that the caterer has been notified of the foid allergies i informed then about and that they can and will remember to avoid certain things (i.e. cooking with peanut oil). I don't annoy her about it, but one of my close friends is highly allergic so I like to sometimes check in with her that that's been taken care of.

    Hmmm..... That's a very good point. How often should we be checking in? We're 9 months out and the only vendor we really speak to is the photographer and the caterer.

    I've been doing exactly that, it's a great idea! Just yesterday I got an email back from one of mine (not a major one, just for our Tapsnap kiosk) but that the woman my wedding coordinator referred us to back in Feb is no longer there. I actually only decided to hire her based on the deal she offered and I liked her as a person she was super nice and would be the attendant at the wedding helping guests use the kiosk. If i didn't email to check in, I wonder if I would have been informed? It's a very good idea esp as many of us booked our vendors like a year ago! I signed a contract and sent a deposit so I'm sure they're going to honor the deal she gave us but it just took me by surprise, I'm lucky it wasn't a major vendor....that's scary!!

    I just did this yesterday!! Our venue is also our caterer, decorator, and florist. I emailed the lady we were working with just to check in and was told she was no longer there. After a minor heart attack, I thought good thing I checked in now rather than a couple more months from now. Still plenty of time and things are going to be ok.

    To be honest I would be annoyed. Unless something terrible happened, she should have completed your order and just not have taken anymore custom orders.

    Good reminder! I just checked in with all my vendors because i booked them all about a year or so ago. Down to 6 months so i wanted to check and make sure everyone is on board.

    I would be annoyed she didn't complete your order. I agree with Richard though if she doesn't want to do the work it'd probably not be best to push the issue.

    @MrsLMac, no, I was paying her $600+ for these invitations and we were pretty far along in the process.

    @Richard, I'm going through my bank statements now because I honestly can't remember if she has a deposit for me. If she does, I'm going to request a refund. I don't want to work with a flake.

    Good reminder! I sent all mine an email the other day just checking in. I worry they'll forget about me but keep telling myself they're professionals. Smiley smile

    She's refunding my deposit. Glad I checked that too. It's a shame, because she's really talented, but ultimately, I'll save like $500 by doing it myself.

    Just glad I checked, because I don't think she ever would have mentioned it. Bizarre.
