Flying???

Mrs. Fornasty, on August 8, 2011 at 5:37 AM Posted in Planning 0 11

Hello Brides, and Brides to Be... I am trying to finish the honeymoon planning, and I know its to early to look for airfare... I have heard that its cheaper to look for airfare Tuesday - Thursday, and the most expensive day to fly is Sunday... Any information on this topic would be great... I'm almost out of my budget money so I wanna try to make this work!

I've heard the same, but Tuesday -Thursday are just days to LOOK for the tickets, not necessarily fly on those days. The only thing that ever worked for me is looking for several days, and trying several combinations of flights. But it was always worth it!

My mom is a travel agent and this is what I have picked up- Prices change CONSTANTLY. Even by the hour. Most say it is often cheaper to book on tuesdays and thursday but that doesnt always happen that often. They will post them cheaper at early morning hours alot. I get of work at 2am so whenever we travel I would check them then. If they just had alot of people purchase tickets for the same flight in a short period of time they will raise them for that flight. This is because I will look to them like a you are booking a group trip, so they know more ticket will have to be purchased. We do group trips alot so this happens often. Basiclly, they are usually cheaper at odd times, when its not convenient, or when people wouldnt usually be purchasing tickets. When my mom is planning trips for herself, she actually sets her alarm for like 2-4 am everynight and get up and checks prices every morning and then goes back to bed lol and she has gotten alot of cheap flights that way.

Sign up for alerts for the flights you're looking for. I set up an alert on Kayak.com for our flights to Europe. The were $1000-$1100 all summer, and then a couple of weeks ago, Continental and United (in light of their merger, I guess) offered the non-stop flights for $800 each. We jumped on that. The next day they were $30 more, then $100 more, and now a non-stop flight is back to $1100. Moral of the story: alerts are key!

Good tips ladies! Ya also I'm my experience don't wait too close to the trip to book them or they will be more expensive..also avoid holiday travel if possible, they are always more expensive.

Look at multiple airports, but be smart about it. Sometimes a different airport will have dramatically different prices, but factor in whether transportation will make the savings a wash.

For example, here in DC we have three airports: National, Dulles and BWI. Flights out of National tend to be more expensive, but it's on the Metro line and it only costs me $2 in Metro fare or a $10 cab. Whereas if I choose Dulles or BWI, I have to factor in airport transportation (about $50 each way) or parking ($10/day). So I fly out of National unless the price difference is truly significant.

Also, look at the first flight out for the day - yes it blows to get up at 4 in the morning, but you are much less likely to get hit with delays. Delays tend to stack up over the course of the day, so the first flight out is usually clear sailing.

Dont get discouraged though... Prices arent cheaper at 2am every day. Alot of factors go in to what price you will get. They could even be significantly higher when you check them sometimes. You really have to keep checking it often and give it some time (but not too much). It may take weeks for you to find a good price but it will be worth it.
