Flowers from Trader Joes?

SphynxLover, on January 6, 2014 at 3:06 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 9 23

Ok being a bride on a budget I am planning on doing all my own flowers. Has anyone ever used Trader Joes for flowers? They always have wonderful greatly priced flowers that seem to last. How does it work since most flowers they have are seasonal? I know I can't be picky with the types and colors but do I get any say? Also how many should I order? I have NO clue! I called thinking they could give me some guidance but the guy was just like "Oh yea we can do that just call a week ahead of time." I was planning on 4-5 bouquets, 10 bouts, ceremonial touches, and center pieces.

About how much do you think this will cost you? I ask becasue i just met with a florist on Sat and my quote came out to 1350.00

12 centerpieces, 8 bouquets, 15 bouts, 4 corsages and extra flowers for the other centerpieces.

i was hoping to spend less then $1,000 so im debating if to do my own. even though 350.00 isnt that much more and might be worth it so i dont have to worry about it

My friend did flowers from Trader Joe's for her wedding last June. She had a florist do the bouquets and a few daisies in mason jars hanging from shepard's hooks at the ceremony, which we moved to the reception as centerpieces afterwards.

She just called the Trader Joe's near her in Arlington, VA and had them make sure to have lots of the particular flowers she wanted. We then picked them up the day before her wedding, kept them in water.. and then trekked to the venue where we arranged into little vases and spread around the centerpieces. It looked absolutely amazing with her cheap little vases from Michael's.. however I would recommend making sure you account for PLENTY of time to do DIY flowers unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing before hand.. but it looked amazing and was absolutely beautiful!

Their flowers are inexpensive and last well and if doing DIY would definitely recommend Trader Joe's!

I can't speak about Trader Joe's, but I was also thinking about going the bulk flower route for my centerpieces and decoration flowers. (Still undecided if I'll do bouquets myself or not). Anyway, I came across this blog that has amazing instructions and tutorials for prepping and taking care of flowers this way.

    http://www.bloomsbythebox.com/pub/do-it-yourself-wedding-flowers-101.cfm

I guess Blooms by the Box is a company that sells flowers, but they give out lots of great advice I found. I was planning on using Costco, or a local company that also does boxed flowers but is based in my city.

This guide also has a chart near the end that tells you approximately how many stems you would need if you were doing different sized and shaped centerpieces, bouquets, bouts, etc. I found it very helpful!

I did sams club for some of my flowers. You could do some price comparison online.

I was thrilled with my flowers. The instructions for how much in advance you need to order are also listed online.

Once the flowers arrived I had a local florist put them together for me. The florist fee was free because I had an all inclusive wedding at a bed and breakfast.

I always look at the flowers when I'm in Trader Joe's because they are always gorgeous. I'm doing my own bouquets and boutineers, and was thinking of using Trader Joes. Didn't think about making sure they stocked up on what I wanted, great idea.

All I can find online is DIY how to put it together, but not how many you'd actually need. You could try going to a store with fake flowers like Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Walmart even, and make up mock bouquets there. That way you can use different flowers to see what you like, plus you can get an idea of how many of each flower you will need for each bouquet.

I did a centerpiece mock up using flowers from Central Market and Market Street and they lasted four days! I would think Trader Joes flowers would be comparable to those. If you're not sure, just purchase a few and do a mock up and see how they are.

I'm so pleased to know I'm not the only one thinking about trader joes for wedding flowers. I picked up 3 bunches of peonies tonight for $18 and basically paid $1 per peony! Florists in my area are charging $6 a stem and as high as $19 in some areas. I know this after calling around. I'm so thrilled right now with my find. tomorrow mornings when I go to pick up coffee for my FH that he can't get enough of, I'm going to become friendly with a manager there and sneak my way in to have them order flowers for my wedding.

We didn't have any flowers except for boutineers for the groom's party. We bought some roses from Costco and a kit from JoAnn's and it worked out well

Im going to do Trader Joes and Michaels as well. Wonder where we can get the white rose petals that are in bags to spread around the grass for the ceremonial part of the wedding?

    Hello, Ladies!

Congratulations on your upcoming weddings. We just saw this post, and as much as we love Trader Joe's; We strongly suggest against creating your own wedding flowers. On top of everything you are worrying about leading up to your big day, flowers are something that are very temperamental and need to be composed no earlier than the day before your wedding. Additionally, they need to be kept in a cool, dry space. With excessive touching, transportation and not being kept in an appropriate environment they can easily wilt, or even worse.

Furthermore, as some of you have mentioned, the floral at TJ's is seasonal, and Peonies particularly, have one of the shortest floral seasons. But even if you can find florals you were hoping to find, you will be putting together arrangements when you should be enjoying your rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. You also have to designate someone to transport them to your venue and set them up (or speak to your wedding coordinator about this!) If you try to have a friend or family member do this, it is rarely appreciated. Please keep all of this in mind, when assembling your wedding team.

    To TypeASoiree:

You do realize that some people have a budget? Maybe, just maybe, paying $10,000 or more for a wedding is impractical and they would rather spend that money on their house, future, children, etc???

Of course it's not ideal to have to do ANYTHING on your wedding day but show up and be gorgeous. But if a bride is considering DIY, maybe it's because paying someone to make sure everything they get for their wedding is the most expensive thing possible, just isn't an option. Maybe the bride's mother is her wedding coordinator. Maybe you should sit down, shut up and let people who want to pay tons of money come to you. Not shame those who can't afford it by telling them how hard and terrible it is to do things yourself.

I'd love to get everyone's ideas on where the good wholesalers are. And I love the idea about getting practice fake flowers.

This is my local TJ's and I NEVER thought about doing this! I was dead set on using Sam's club! I may use Trader Joe's for my bouquet since I'm planning on making it myself.

I agree! Some people have to pick and choose what budget items to splurge on, cut down on, or not use at all. There is also plenty of competition out there, like Bloom Culture, that is happy to cater to us simpletons and help us through the DIY process.
