Flowers: fragrant or pungent?

Catherine, on August 11, 2016 at 12:57 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 5

Do any of you have experience with flowers that turned out to have more of a smell than you expected?

I saw one thread on here about baby's breath smelling like spit and read elsewhere that freesia may be too strong smelling to use a lot in a centerpiece. The idea was that people might not want to have really strongly scented flowers around at the table where they're eating.

I'm planning on doing my own flowers, and that was something I hadn't even thought of. I'm going to get some flowers to practice with, but I wanted to ask: Have you ever had a flower's smell put you off your meal? Or are there any flowers in particular that smell good but are just too pungent if you have a lot of them in a room?

I don't mind lilies but my FH and his family can't stand the smell to the point of not being able to be near them.

I can't be near most types of lilies. Daisies and baby's breath can smell dirty, like hot weeds. I don't like the smell of carnations but they usually aren't very strong. If you're buying wholesale flowers, sometimes they are less fragrant compared to if you are buying from a local grower.

My sisters wedding had babys breath everywhere and it was just fine. I had a bouquet of stargazer lilies on my desk once and my boss literally had to leave because his allergies got so bad. I couldn't imagine if these everywhere at a wedding. I feel like a good florist should be able to give you recommendations on what to use or not to use.

I'm not a fan of the smell of baby's breath, or lilies. I just think they stink. I've never had an issue with them in centerpieces though.
