Flower Meltdown

Kiana, on April 9, 2019 at 4:03 PM Posted in Planning 0 27

Hi everyone! I am having serious issues with my flower budget. I have a pretty modest budget for my wedding at about $12,000. Everything seems to be right on track except for my flowers. I've gotten two quotes and they've both been for around $1,500. I'm looking to spend no more than $500-$600, which I know is not a lot. That's why I've incorporated a lot of greenery and pretty modest arrangements in my inspiration pictures. I'm considering doing my own flowers because this seems like the cheapest option, has anyone chosen to do their own flowers? If so, did you order online? Please help!

I plan to do my own and am also having a modest budget with lots of greenery. I hope for trader joes or costco, etc for real ones. If not then I'll do fake but add oils or something to make them look real!

It certainly is cheaper to DIY, but there are other ways to cut back if you want to use professional. First, I have seen quite a few posts on wedding wire that greenery can sometimes be more expensive. For centerpieces, consider not doing them on every table. Maybe just do something like candles on half of the tables. You can also recycle all of the bridesmaids bouquets as decor in the reception space. Or, you can forgo bridesmaids bouquets completely and only do corsages for your girls. Also, try asking your florist to use only one or two types of flowers thats are more expensive (i.e. peonys or ranunculus) and using cheaper flowers to bulk it out (i.e. mums, carnations). Hopefully you find this a little helpful. Good luck!

I decided to go with a florist, but prior to that decision I looked online & was considering using Flower Moxie. I believe that their prices are in the $500 - $700 range.

Greenery can be just as if not more expensive than flowers. If your budget is $600ish for flowers I would just get bouquets and boutonnières from the florist and do something different for centerpieces.

I really researched on my flowers. I decided to do high-quality faux flowers. They are more expensive than the kind you can get at hobby stores, but they really look like real flowers. Everyone is shocked when I tell them they are velvet and silk flowers. Your budget would allow for high-quality faux flowers. Check Afloral.com. Amazon and Joann's have some very realistic greenery, wreaths, and stems as well, but you have to weed through their inventory. Some are too fake.

The great thing about using faux flowers is that you can take your time choosing and arranging them. Return the ones you don't use.

With Joann's, wait for their sales. I got very realistic greenery wreaths that are usually $49.99 for $15.00 each. It was a 70% off spring floral sale.

I did my own using flowers, vases etc from the Dollar Tree. I spent around $300 and did 8 centerpieces, a memorial bouquet with extra flowers needed for the card box and other small decor items. If you can do them yourself, I would recommend it. Dollar Tree has great flowers and even Michaels is having a 50% off sale right now. If not, maybe get the bouquet you want and have the BM's carry a single flower and have the GM wear a simple, single flower bout. For the centerpieces, consider mason jars with fairy lights, upcycled bottles, spray painted your color with decorative branches in them, unscented candles. Good luck!

Flowers can DEFINITELY be a budget breaker. We also had a slightly low floral budget. We opted out of things like centerpieces on every table, unnecessary arrangements, etc. All we had was a few small arrangements, two centerpieces (parents' tables) an arrangement for the head table, and the standard bouquets & boutonnieres. Super simple, and that still came in just under $1,500.
If you have the ability to DIY or shop around on Etsy, definitely price that out before you commit! You can save a bunch, but the DIY route can also end up costing just as much if not more than hiring a pro - so be careful! Smiley smile
And just remember - flowers don't make or break a wedding. If your setting is already beautiful and you don't add anything (flower-wise), no one will notice. Good luck to you!!

Check with your local grocery store to see if they do wedding flowers. We have a relative in the northeast who got hers through a higher-end grocery chain, Wegman's, and they were gorgeous -- and she swore they were very reasonable.

Greenery isn't always cheaper. If they look at your inspo pics, they may think you want those exact flowers/combo.

I am getting all my flowers for 712 dollars. We aren't doing any ceremony flowers though. We have 3 corsages, 1 bride bouquet, 2 attendant bouquets, 3 silk flower kissing balls, 8 boutonnieres, and 16 hydrangea vases for tables. Also an arrangement on the sweetheart table to put my bouquet in and set up/delivery dismantle. My bouquet will only be 8 inches in diameter and the other bouquets slightly smaller. I know he gave me a fair deal but I don't care too much about flowers. Best of all, I don't have to do anything and they're all real except for the flower girls kissing balls.
These are the flowers he says he will use: "organic handtied bouquet of eryngium, blue veronica, Hypericum berries, astilbe and light blue delphium, light blue novella and gray green foliages like silver dollar eucalyptus and dusty miller."
None of that means anything to me lol. But maybe those flowers are cheaper. Honestly, I think what helped me most is I didn't have some theme or vision I wanted to carry out and no freaking color scheme. Good luck hope you find a good fit!

Unfortunately, my wedding is in a town with no Trader Joe's or Costco! That was thought of mine too!

I was worried about spending maybe $300 less and being even more stressed out than if I were to just spend a little extra money. I'm still waiting on some quotes so fingers crossed!

Very true, I didn't think about that. They are probably quoting me for those exact flowers. I decided to do single flowers with a little greenery for my girls and leaves/petals sprinkled around for my "centerpieces". I'm honestly thinking now that the reason it might have been so expensive was the types of flowers in my inspo pictures.

I really don't have a huge want for centerpieces. I was going to have leaves/petals sprinkled in the center, I'm going with candles and Mercury glass to add a vintage feel! I'll definitely look more into carnations and other cheaper flowers and see if that'll bring down my costs.

Everyone has been so helpful! I'll definitely be looking in to other options as far as specific flowers go. I'm also going to see if I can try out one of the websites that y'all suggested. Thanks so much!
