Florist Cancellation - What is an acceptable time frame?

Anonymous, on June 28, 2013 at 6:31 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Has anyone tried to cancel their florist? What is the acceptable time frame?

I consulted with a wedding florist, paid a $40 deposit, which I was told on the phone and at the time of my consultation would be non-refundable, but could be applied to the final balance, should I decide to go with her.

I consulted with other florists and received an estimate for the same job, 40% below the cost of the first florist, which included flowers I originally wanted, that the first florist told me would cost double!

When I called the first florist to cancel (6 weeks before), she went crazy, claiming that it was too late, that "my" flowers had already been growing for me, and that she didn't know how she was going to cancel the order. She claimed that she had attempted to contact me through phone and e-mail, and that now she will have to contact the grower to see if maybe I can pay HIM a fee for canceling. NO contact was made, not even to confirm the ACTUAL number of tables.

Please advise!

As long as you didn't sign a contract yet then you can always cancel. a month out is sufficient. this florist is a bit crazy...geez you don't have a contract yet. you could cancel a week before and she can't hold it against you. Although I wouldn't reccomend that. 6 weeks is enough time.

That is not a good vendor...I would try the same game back at her that you found better prices and since there is no contract and you only put in a deposit, it is not set in stone. Oh really so she means to say she is only making flowers for you and not for her store or for other brides sorry but since you didn't make a contract, how would she know how many flowers to grow for you? She is full of $hi7. They put flowers in fridges for long periods of time, then take them out days before they need to bloom. You are six weeks before. I am sure she is trying to take advantage of you.

All u did was put a deposit. If you didn't sign a contract & work out details then this lady sounds nutso. The flowers are being grown for u? They aren't going to waste. This isn't a phone contract, there's no cancellation fee. That's the point if the deposit & putting more significant amounts down the closer u get to your date. Unless you actually did sign a contract & it says you agree to a cancelation fee then this lady has nothing to argue u for. I say take the $40 lost deposit & go to someone who sounds like a more reliable, all-there, not trying to up charge u professional.

That is just crazy. I'd pay the $40. just to be rid of her. Flowers are not grown 'for you'.

    But thanks for the laugh!

Thank you all SO much. I have been so upset over this! I DID have a great consultation with this woman, I just never expected her to be so suddenly crazy! I've been freaking out over whether or not she could sue me or something else crazy.

I definitely feel she has enough time to cancel, but I'm pretty green about all of this stuff, and I just wanted to be sure. I am ABSOLUTELY going with the other florist - who didn't charge me to consult and has a two week cancellation policy. And is saving me 40%!

    THANK YOU!!

The wedding is in August - our date has changed since I signed up for the account, and you can't change that info without contacting the website through e-mail. Just to clarify.

That's crazy! I would eat the $40 and not worry about it. Why would she ask for a deposit without a contract?

Why would she ask for a deposit without a contract? And i would have never even paid "consultation fee" consults should be free and yoi should have paid a deposit AFTER you decided to book her, upon signing a contract.

Eat the $40 and get rid of her.

If you click my wedding, then profile, then edit wedding details you should be able to change the date from there. I had to change my a few times before we made our final wedding date decision. I would take the $40 loss and get a new florist.
