Florals on a Budget

Christine, on June 9, 2020 at 9:54 PM Posted in Style and Décor 2 67

I'm realizing flowers are REALLY pricey and I'm in agreement with FH that flowers shouldn't take such a huge chunk of the budget, so I've decided on DIY-ing my centerpieces, arch, and aisle decor and just having the Bridal Party flowers ordered from a florist. But this includes the bouquet for me (Bride) and five bridesmaids, Boutonnieres for all men including fathers, flowergirl, and corsages for the moms.

Now I'm thinking of doing real flowers for the Bride's bouquet and DIY silk bouquets for the other women.

What are your thoughts on florals and how are you spending your flower budget at your weddings?

Ugh I would have loved to have more flowers too but I ended up only doing faux flowers for the boutonnières corsages and bouquets. Michaels or other craft stores will sell fake flowers for cheap!
You can also try Costco or sams club for real flowers at a discounted price

I avoided florals as well. I ordered from the florist flowers for me, my husband, and our parents (2 moms and 2 dads)
I made all bridal party florals with flowers from my local grocery store (Kroger) and saved a ton!
I used candles as my center pieces. Everything looked great and no one missed the flowers. The only reason I even ordered any thing from a florist was because I doh yes my abilities and knew my bouquet would be a focal point. Looking back, my bouquet was nice but not spectacular. I could have done one just as nice.

Also going to try not to spend too much on florals here, have you looked into Something Borrowed Blooms? It’s a silk flower rental online store and I think I’m going to use them instead! I’m personally not at all into the idea of DIYing my own florals but I also don’t care about having real flowers when their silk ones look so nice.

Ugh is a good word. Exactly how I feel because I really don't want to spend too much on one of the most, uh, disposable part of the wedding. But who gets married without them, right?
I did think about Costco and Sam's for some bulk flowers, I'm thinking Baby's Breath and other neutrals from there might be worth it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Unfortunately, I can't use candles in my Venue (The Yacht Starship II), unless I'm keeping them unlit. I am likely doing water beads, and blue and clear bottles/jars with either faux flowers and some baby's breath from the local grocery store.

The local DIY flowers are a good option! Thank you.

Thanks! Something to consider since I'm looking at faux flowers anyway.

My Fiance and I are doing basically the same as you. We're going to be getting our bridal party flowers from a local florist (I get a 20% discount because my Grandmother was best friends with the owner) and then we'll be making our own centerpieces, arch decorations, etc. We're thinking of getting discounted bulk flowers from Costco or artificial flowers from Michaels.

We're also doing lanterns as the main centerpieces and I have a local store where I can get them cheap.

It's nice that you have a network like that. Unfortunately for me, I didn't grow up in this area and don't have family close by.

I was going to do lighthouse shaped lanterns as the aisle decor (found them online) and various blue and clear jars and/or bowls with baby's breath, some faux flowers, and blue water beads for centerpieces.

That sounds absolutely wonderful! If you would like a good cheap alternative to baby's breath White Wax Flowers are extremely similar to baby's breath in looks and they have a beautifully delicate citrus scent.

My fiancé looked at the florist quote, gasped, and asked why we can’t just make our own arrangements. It is definitely a cost savings, but also factor in the time it will take you to put them together either day before or day of, making sure they’re chilled so they don’t wilt, and who will be setting up. Typically the florist would, and you don’t want to have to worry about all that on your wedding day while you’re trying to get ready!! I’m moving forward with a florist, but asking for very small basic arrangements and that he repurpose. Also locally sourced!

I did think about the inconvenience, especially since I have a daytime wedding. I did talk to my fiancé about mobilizing the bridal party to help set up. I am still contemplating on using a florist, but need to confirm with the coordinator if the set up crew can help with some things versus others.

I added a picture in the comments of what White Wax flowers look like. I honestly think they're so much more elegant than baby's breath and the buds are slightly bigger.

To help keeps the floral budget down I avoided using them in center pieces. I have a handful of centerpieces that will have baby’s breath but not any other floral. I am going with real mainly since I won money off at a bridal fair but to keep cost low I’m doing baby’s breath bouquets for my bridesmaids. My bouquet will be roses and greenery but I asked for mainly greenery over the flowers to help cost down with per stem as well! I’m glad I’m going with a florist mainly because I’m to impatient to do it myself without getting frustrated 😅

Good choices! All these tips are helping. A good portion of the pricing does revolve around the choice and availability of the flowers. I am using a lot of greenery, too, mostly for centerpieces and my arch. My aisle decor will not have flowers, only lanterns and bows.

I'm also using Something Borrowed Blooms! Very convenient and don't have to worry about my florals! They also have decor items that you can rent too, and everything will be delivered to your house a few days before.
