Floating Candles

Mandy, on November 22, 2010 at 9:26 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

Has anyone floated candles in a pool? Can you give me an idea of how many I will need?

Thanks!

I've seen it done, it all depends on how big the pool is and how big the candles are.

It is a 15 x 30 kind of kidney shaped. I was looking at the 3" round candles.

Mandy, while I would love to just tell you the exact number you will need, it's not like there's a mathematical equasion for figuring out how many floating candles go in a kidney shaped pool. However, with that said, I'm thinking you're going to need a lot even if you don't want them that close together.

A rectangular pool thats 15x30 is 450 square feet of surface area. Think of how many candles you want per square foot and multiply that times 450. You're going to need a lot of candles!

What other type of lighting will you have? I would do between 25 - 50.

Wow!!! That's way more than I had anticipated. I wonder if I grouped them together and spaced the groups further apart if I could get away with less.......??

How about a fountain with a light in the middle and then do some accent candles here and there? Don't forget to weigh down the candles or they will all float to one end of the pool.

I've seen where they put like paper lanterns in pools lit with candles inside & it looks really nice. Plus u dont need that many to make it pop.

This looks like four candles grouped together. Is it for a reception? Can you add silk rose petals with the candles for a more dramatic look? It's a lot cheaper than over 500 candles Smiley tongue

Good luck with it. We're also doing floating candles and my area is a little bigger than yours. We're doing both the floating pop up lanterns and candles. Im still purchasing 200 candles to go with them. Our wedding though is at night and its only light will be firelight. Im not sure how far away youre wedding is but if its a ways I'd start purchasing them now... Thats what Ive down and mines not till September! Lol. Best of luck!

It depends on how big the pool and the candles are but I would say between 10 and 20.

    1st picture: larger candles

2nd: the article said it was a 15-metre long pool & they put 400 candles in

3rd: just candles surrounding the pool. i'm guessing this is the shape that's similar to yours??

The more the better as a just in case. You could also vary up the sizes since floating candles can be small to quite large. Might consider buying in bulk which can be cheaper:
