Flats? Heels? Or both?

Katie, on June 20, 2017 at 11:42 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 33

I'm trying to decide on shoes to get for my wedding next March. Originally I had been thinking about wearing heels for the ceremony and pictures and then switching to flats for the reception. However, now I've read that that can cause issues with your dress dragging on the ground if you switch from heels to flats. I have a floor length A-line dress which will need to be hemmed and will probably be bustled during the reception. So now I'm tossing around the idea of just skipping the heels altogether and wearing flats for the whole wedding.

I'm really don't wear heels that often because I have back problems so if I went for a heel it would probably be a 2 inch heel max. I'm only 5'2" and I'm 9 inches shorter than my FH so there's going to be a big height difference either way.

Anyone have any experience with this? I'm just kind of unsure and was hoping to get some other opinions.

Are you going to get a bustle for your dress? You could possibly bustle the dress for the reception in such a way that it reduces the dress length a little (and I do mean a little). Most brides I've seen ultimately ditched their shoes anyway regardless and were fine. Comfort over style was more important when dancing and having a good time.

I wore flats the whole day. I hardly ever wear heels, and when I do I usually have pain in my feet or back. So I wasn't about to wear heels on a day when you stand a lot!

I am planning on getting a bustle for my dress since it has a bit of a train and I don't want to have it dragging for the reception. I'm starting to lean more towards flats for the comfort factor since being on my feet all day is going to be hard on my back already and wearing heels is probably just going to make that worse.

I would discuss with your seamstress when doing fittings, and bring both pairs of shoes, and see what they can do for the bustle while in flats.

I'm also much shorter than FH but not a fan of heels unless I'll be sitting a lot, so I feel your pain! I feel like a 2" heel would be manageable with the alterations and not drag as much compared to like 5" heels and flats

You could do heels for the ceremony and then bustle it to match your flats for the reception. I'm wearing toms all day.

Buy wedges the same height as your dress and you won't have hem issues.

I recently decided to wear killer 3 inch stilettos for my ceremony. For the reception, I'm changing into these platform foam sandals from Asos.

If you want to switch between flats and heels, get it tailored for your flats! As long as they aren't super-high heels, it'll look fine. That's what I'm gonna do.

I feel that same as you! My FH is 14 inches taller than me, so whatever I do there will be a height difference. I'll probably just go with heels, but I only buy comfy ones. The last time I wore heels was for my senior prom, but I've always really liked the brand "Comfort Fit." I know you can get it at Payless for less than $40 a pair (sometimes it's on sale for 20!) It's not necessarily designer or high fashion, but in my experience, they last a long time and don't really ever hurt my feet.

I am doing heels for my ceremony and flats for my reception. My heels aren't very tall and I will have the dress bustled so I'm not that concerned with it dragging because I expect it to get dirty anyways. Whatever shoes you decide to go with, make sure you wear them around the house and break them in first!

I wore a lower (like 2.5in) block heel for pics and the ceremony and flats for the reception...I had the dress tailored to the heels so it would look right in photos. The dress did drag some when I had the flats on at the reception....but nothing that didn't come out when I had it cleaned after the wedding. Also it was not a big enough deal length wise to make me trip or anything...I just would avoid sky high heels to flats.

I'm only shorter than FH by maybe 2 or 3 inches and I want to be as comfortable as possible on my wedding day so I am definitely doing flats, haven't quite found the ones yet but I'm looking!

Honest advice from a married: your dress will drag and get dirty no matter what you end up doing.

I did slight wedges (like 1.5in) from Colehaan. I personally find his shoes (flats specifically) to be most comfortable. I wore them around the house to break them in and I am freggin ready to dance! No matter what you pick, it's important to have the dress properly hemmed/bustled. I've seen so many people have poor hems or bustles done and guests step on/ruin the dress or even worse trip up the bride on the dance floor.

I wore blue flats the entire day and I'm so so so happy I did! I was on my feet for over 12 hours and very rarely wear heels, so flats were definitely the right choice. I also didn't want my dress dragging or looking hemmed incorrectly at any point. I had a fluffy a-line so the whole "heels make your butt look better" argument didn't apply! You only saw my shoes in two photos, and they were intentionally taken. My dress isn't filthy from dragging and no one stepped on it either!

I'm wearing heals and boots. I love the look of my heals with my dress and my boots are beautifully embroidered and fit nicely with our outdoor wedding. Wear what you love and are comfortable in; it's your weddingSmiley smile

My dress works for my heels and my flats (heels aren't that tall)...but I am going to try to avoid the flats, they are just coming along for when my feet get sore...if they get sore.

We are also getting married in March! I am going with flats for sure! I never wear heels and I'm not making an exception for my wedding. It just wouldn't be "me" in heels Smiley smile

I'm wearing flats for the ceremony & reception, as I'm about 3 inches shorter than my FH - and at 5'11" I'm taller than most of my guests already!

I agree with PP who've said discuss it with your seamstress if you are interested in heels for the ceremony, and flats for the reception. (S)he will have a better understanding of what is possible!
