fl residents with fl marriage license + fl officiant... with our venue in Nc?

KRISTY, on October 10, 2021 at 4:50 PM Posted in Florida Planning 0 2

Howdy! We are FL residents having our wedding in NC. We have a friend who is ordained in FL who we wanted to perform our ceremony, but she would not be recognized to ordain us in the county in NC where our venue is, so... we were planning to be married in FL before the big party up in NC.

HOWEVER, we called our county's clerk office and they basically told us that since we are FL residents with an FL officiant obtaining a license... they "don't care if the wedding is in outer space, as long as it's returned to FL and signed off by an FL officiant since it's an FL license for 2 FL residents."

Does anybody have experience with this? Is it really okay? Have you done this? I feel like I'm breaking a rule? Haha, just want some extra reassurance. I might call and triple-check tomorrow because I'm paranoid.

I’m not sure. There is a space on the marriage license where the officiant certifies that you and your spouse were joined by him/her on marriage in accordance with Florida law and you are required to put the city, town or location of the marriage in that section. I don’t know if that’s limited to Florida only locations since it is a Florida marriage license. You may need to do a little more research to confirm the information you were given because I’d hate for your marriage license to not be accepted or invalidated because a Clark gave you incorrect information. Maybe call another Florida county clerk’s office or ask the clerk you called to point you in the direction that confirms the information you were given.

Hmmm I've never heard of this before!! Generally you need to apply for a marriage license in the county & state where your wedding will be taking place (so in your case, NC).

I second Sharonda's suggesting of calling a different Florida county clerk's office to confirm that info!
