Love love it and may steal it! My fiancé isn't a great public speaker so I can definitely see the appeal of this option. Custom vows are meant to be special to the two of you, so if doing it privately will make it more special, go for it. There's nothing wrong with stealing some private romantic moments for you two during your day!

Did you already send out invitations? If you invited folks to a ceremony and reception, they might be surprised when they show up and there is no vow ceremony (they might feel like they were late or missed something). If you haven't sent them out yet and you want to do the vows privately, I would just word the invitation as reception only so there isn't any confusion.

We are doing the same thing! We wanted a private moment between the two of us to say our own vows and calm our nerves before all the craziness. During the ceremony we will be saying traditional vows. It's your day so you can do it however you want!
