First florist visit; important things to ask?

Kate, on July 24, 2019 at 2:02 AM Posted in Planning 0 8

Hi all, we are meeting with our first potential florist this weekend and I'm nervous because I don't really know how an appointment goes. Venue and photographer were easy because I knew exactly what I wanted but I don't know anything about flowers and what I should be asking them apart from price! Any hints or tips would be very much appreciated, thanks!

Do you have examples of bouquets and arrangements you like? Color scheme of the flowers? If you have picture inspo ask what types of flowers they are and if they are available in September. Sometimes it depends. If they can't get a certain flower you like in pictures ask if there is something similar looking that would work. Ask if they are pretty confident in getting the flower selections from their providers. They either are or they aren't. Me being a stickler for the types of flowers I wanted, I didn't want a florist who admitted they were a smaller shop on the grand chain of florists and sometimes they get items that don't look good or can't get them at all. You don't want that. But if your flowers are simple and the main available ones it shouldn't be an issue. Do you know how many and what types of decor arrangements you want like centerpieces, for the ceremony, around the reception?

    Hey there!
Don't be nervous! You are in control. Just explain your vision of how you would like things to look.
Take color swatches and pictures you like, if you have them. Make sure to ask for pictures of their previous weddings and check out the cooler, with their everyday work.

If you like what you see in the cooler, you will love your wedding flowers 💐.

Be open to suggestions, creative minds do their best work when you don't put alot of restrictions on them.

If you have non negotiable must haves, speak up, don't be shy. They will guide you so no need to worry.

Have fun! It will be an exciting step in your wedding journey.
If they don't have what you are looking for, that's ok. You need to find the right fit for your wedding.

Let me know , how it goes! ❤🌺🌻🌹🌷🌸💐

I owned a Florist in a small town. The size of the Florist doesn't dictate what type of flowers you can get or when.

I ordered plenty of flowers from Hawaii in the dead of winter.
You just have to find a Florist that will go above and beyond.

Flowers are seasonal. To get them out of season can be accomplished, but can be pricey.

Small town florists can do beautiful work, without all of the mark up of a bigger chain.
I wouldn't write off a Florist just based on size. I worked with all kinds of flowers, not just the simple ones.

I'd definitely go by years of experience and what the quality of their work is.

Good to know. But I was specifically told by a florist that they don't have as much pull with pricier flowerss in our area because the bigger and "better" shops in Philly get all the product from the supplier first since they push the product and get it out there. I guess she didn't want to go above and beyond by finding different suppliers then. She even was the one who said those flowers from Australia etc could potentially come in bad condition. I just was not satisfied with her confidence level in getting what I wanted among other things she did wrong. I have my florist squared away anyway.

Do they have a website or instagram page with examples of their work? That will give you a good idea of what their displays look like. If not, make a Pinterest page with color schemes/flower types you like.

Ask for a portfolio of previous work if you can. Also ask to see their workspace if possible, the biggest indicator of any business is how they keep their shops.

A florist we didn't go with had dried and browning flowers out for a wedding the following weekend. If she was planning to use those flowers in a week, then what would mine look like?

One of the local florists on wedding wire doesn’t have a shop she says it’s and in home studio so we can’t visit, I’m guessing I should be skeptical, her photos online look good but I’m suspicious when I can’t go see her work or her work space. Is this one of those times I should go with my gut?
