First Fitting Disappointment

Private User, on June 11, 2015 at 10:50 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

I swore I wouldn't post on the forum, but here I am. I am hoping someone else has been in my shoes. I shopped for my dress in February (August wedding) and found "the" dress. I even had that teary "this is it" moment in the salon. My mom took pictures of me wearing it and I have looked at them and looked forward to it coming in and for my first fitting. I went yesterday for the fitting and I really didn't like the dress! It wasn't as comfortable as I remember it being in the store, the features I loved before bother me now, and I just didn't feel like it was my dress anymore. The alterations staff did a great job pinning me in and I could definitely envision what it would look like after alterations but I just couldn't see myself walking down the aisle in it! I am not a picky dresser and I'm the farthest thing from a fashionista you will ever meet so my deflated reaction was nothing I expected. Has this happened to anyone else?

I don't have them from the fitting unfortunately.

The ladies at the salon said "oh nobody likes their dress in the first fitting" but I just really find that hard to believe.

I'm sorry this happened! I go in to pick up my dress and try it on for the first time on Tuesday. I'm totally afraid of this... I made myself not look at any other dresses after I bought one, but have definitely teetered on dress regret.

I don't have any advice, but maybe it is true that it does happen more often than we'd think?

Have you looked back on the photos of you when you first chose the dress? Maybe that will help you see the dress the way you saw it before?

I'm sorry your struggling though...there are a few brides on here who have suffered dress regret.

Can I ask why you told yourself your weren't going to post on the forum?

Oh no! I'm sorry this happened. I don't want this to come across the wrong way, but I just have to say it - any chance you're PMSing? I only ask because I know that when I PMS I silently hate every thing and everyone for a few days. I know everyone is different, and I know this is a personal question so please don't feel like you have to answer, I just feel like if I personally had my dress fitting at the "wrong time" there's a chance I could feel differently about it.

Either way, I hope that at your next fitting you fall back in love with it! I'm sure you'll look and feel beautiful!

When you try on a dress at the store, it's likely been tried on a number of time. That can make the fabric less stiff. Your dress is new and might feel less comfortable at first. I would go back to the 2nd fitting, where they have done work and it should start feeling better.

I wouldn't worry too much about the comfort at your first fitting. The dress is stiff and brand new. Think about a new comforter that has been stuff in one of the plastic bags. It needs time to hang.

I hated my dress at my first fitting. It took 3 fittings before I felt like it was mine again. So I would give it a little time. Also, I suggest you stop staring at the photos.

Thanks for all the support. Responding to other comments: I am just not the forum type and have a pretty good "team" I consult on things anyway...but there are some things only other brides can help with I guess! Also, not PMSing... that thought crossed my mind too! And there was nothing specific I didn't like about it. I looked back at the initial pics and just couldn't see what I saw in it before. I just felt nothing when I looked at it. Since posting, I have called the shop and told them to halt alterations for a few days and have arrangements to go try on a couple dresses at another shop that I had cancelled my appointment with after finding my dress. The shop owner I bought my dress from is looking at pictures of the dresses I planned on trying on and is going to look at her stock and see if any of them are close. She was super sweet! Once this is all over she will be getting a GLOWING WW review from me!

Update: I tried on my dress again. The alterations people had pinned it all wrong. I like it better now but I am still not in love with it. I have things narrowed down to 2 dresses and even if I decide against the one I already bought, I will still get store credit minus a restocking fee. I can live with this. They told me to think about it over the weekend. So, while the decision has not been made, I at least feel less stressed. Worst case: I get a beautiful dress.

Well that's the best possible outcome! I'm glad you don't have to feel stuck with your dress
