First Dance

Jacqui76, on January 5, 2016 at 9:45 PM Posted in Planning 0 17

If you are thinking about having dance lessons but not sure if it's worth it, I am highly recommending it! FH and I had our first lesson tonight. He had gotten me a gift certificate because that's what I wanted for my birthday, but he wasn't really looking forward to it as much as I was.

We had our song picked out before we went, which is Better Together by Jack Johnson. We thought we were going to want to learn a Rumba, which we did try, but the instructor also showed us a Nightclub Foxtrot. The Foxtrot was way more fun!! We had so much fun that my FH is actually looking forward to the rest of the lessons now.

I would love to know what other people are doing. What is your song and are you learning a special dance or just winging it?

We are going to do dance lessons, but I don't think we will have a choreographed number. I would rather just feel confident with some moves so we can use them all night.

We are so excited to start our lessons! Our song is "Book of Love" by Peter Gabriel. I melt into tears every time I hear it.

We did better together!! No dance lessons here. Mostly just swaying. Depending on your dress it's tough to do elaborate dancing. My MOH did it for her wedding and it was amazing. But a lot of practice. Including with a fake skirt so she could practice with a full length skirt.

We are definitely not going to do a choreographed performance type of dance either. But the instructor is going to show us some fun things we can do if we feel like it. FH is going to learn how to lead so we'll be able to just dance like we know what we're doing.

My FH would probably commit me into an asylum if I was like "hey babe. Let's go take dance lessons." we're just going to do the sway and holding thing with a turn and dip here and there. Lol. Glad y'all found something you both can enjoy though! Who knows? Might turn into a regular bonding thing

Dance lessons are awesome- they can really challenge your sanity- but awesome.

Glad it's working out for you- definitely not for everyone- and since we are having such a small event- no dancing will be had- which seriously- makes me sad- buuuuuuuuuuuuut- well. it is what it is. I can't change what we decided to do- he wouldn't be happy with it so not even going to fight it.

Ours is O I Long to Feel Your Arms Around Me by Father John Misty, picked because it's not that long and it's slow so we could kinda sway . . . but now I kind of want to convince him to go with our other favorite Father John Misty Song Chateau Lobby #4 because so much of it just goes with us a couple and I think it would be cool to do something a little more fun and upbeat. I might consider some dance lessons for that one though!

I've loved when I've seen couples do a choreographed dance, but FH and I are NOT dancers. Lessons will not help us, we're that bad. So we plan to sway for 1.5 minutes. Don't want to prolong it any longer than necessary. We might look at each other adoringly from time to time to distract our friends and family so they won't notice our awkward dancing.

So glad you posted this. We have been having a hard time agreeing on a first dance song because FH always says the songs are not easy to dance to...lol! I'm trying to convince him to take a few lessons with me so he feels more comfortable. "Better Together" was one of the first songs we considered, but now I think we are leaning more towards "Steady As We Go" by Dave Matthews Band. (edited: grammar)

FH is the one who suggested that we do a choreographed dance. He loves dancing! So, we will be taking lessons later this year, he's so excited about it!

I got a Groupon for dance lessons, but we haven't been yet. We are actually doing two songs as an extended first dance (because they mean that much to us). I Don't Dance by Lee Brice & Shotgun Rider by Tim McGraw.

Our first dance song is "Dream a Little Dream of Me" - the Ella Fitzgerald/Louis Armstrong version. I'm having a friend choreograph for us and I'm over the moon to be working with someone I actually know. I'm a performer (singer/dancer) but my FH just doesn't dance at all haha. So she's going to make sure to throw in things that are simple for him to lead but also fancy tricks within my dance ability so we can hopefully wow everybody. I'm really excited!!!

I'm also toying with the idea of a surprise dance. He's American and my family is Hispanic. So it might be funny to start with "Play that Funky Music" and lead into some salsa dancing or something :] I haven't decided on that yet.

I'm definitely considering any type of dance lesson because I don't want to do the prom sway for 3 minutes, but it's too soon to tell. I'm also not attached to a first dance whatsoever.

I am however obsessed with the choreography on this song and fairly attached to doing it with my bridal party. It won't happen. But a girl can dream.

@mzrosalu if you can get your FH to go to one trial dance lesson, maybe he can see that the songs are easy to dance to, if you know a step or two.

@Fatima you brought a smile to my face because it brought back a memory of when my Dad used to sing Dream a Little Dream of Me with my daughter when she was little.

@Bryce I'm going to watch your link when I get on my laptop. I always like watching the bridal party dances but mine won't be doing it either. LOL

DH and I did dance lessons and it was completely worth it. He did it to make me happy because I was so nervous but I liked the classes more than I thought. I have bought a Groupon for 2 private lessons and he purchased 3 additional lessons for us.

We did dance lessons and definitely felt they were worth the money. Not only was it helpful, but also fun! Our song was "When I First Saw You" from Dreamgirls, the duet version. The song is on my daughter's nighttime playlist so we hear it on the monitor at least 3-4 times a week. Always brings a smile to my face Smiley smile
