So- our first date 7 years ago was ice skating, so we thought it would be fitting to do our first dance be on ice (Dec. 30th so winter wedding). He played hockey and I can skate decently well, so we figured we would just take lessons. BUT what I wanted to ask was does anyone have any idea on a good way to plan a reception where our first dance is on ice. We will have about 250-300 people and struggling to figure out the smoothest and best way to do a figure skating dance on ice (I may need to change out/ in my dress) with that amount of people...do I find an Ice rink and just have some people come? then meet everyone at the reception a bit later? record it and put it on a screen at the reception? do I do the first dance first then everyone go to reception after (too much driving/moving?) or have the reception at the ice arena (which may be difficult to find). suggestions? is this going to be practical? Any ideas would be helpful...i have only been to 1 wedding before...

What if you choreographed a dance that will work for your first dance as well as on ice? You could play the video on screen of the skating while you dance the same thing. I personally think the idea is super sweet but I agree a reception or event near the ice is probably unrealistic but if your venue has a screen I don't see why you couldn't do a video. It may cost a decent chunk for lessons and to film but if you're able to do that and you really want to, go for it.

Super cute idea but seems like it would be extremely hard to execute! I def vote for recording it!

Too bad you don't live in Houston... The Galleria mall has a skating rink and a couple of hotels. You could skate and do the reception in one place, indoors, year-round!

Seems like a lot, live stream it at the reception and meet your party after

FH plays hockey, so I asked his advice. He suggested that if you're really into this idea, look into synthetic ice. They have special plastic flooring that is designed for skating, typically for people to practice away from the rink. He said it might work to bring that into your reception space if you have enough room. ETA: I just searched online, and there are some rental places that will set them up/do tear down for synthetic ice at events. Good luck!

Just as a note from someone who had a choreographed dance as her first dance (it was a hula)...nerves are high on your wedding day. I have performed on stage, done dance competitions, sang solos in choir, had significant parts in musicals, given presentations for many people for work, and I still felt a little nervous doing my hula. Now take that and add ice, something that if you fall it could be really awful and embarrassing and worst case scenario end up with a trip to the hospital (yep I've been to the ER because of a bad ice skating trip). I know you said you both skate well but with nerves and 300 people do you really want to risk that on your wedding day? It's a day you want to be almost perfect so it's probably best to eliminate as many things that could go wrong, and to me that would mean eliminating something that could be possibly embarrassing to maybe even dangerous. Therefore maybe go with the video. But even that I'd caution against because what happens if you get injured practicing? You don't want to be using crutches down the aisle. And even if you don't get injured, watching people ice skate on video for a 3 (or more) minute song might be a little strange or awkward, unless maybe you hired a pro videographer to capture it really well. However in the end it is just 5 minutes (or less) of your wedding, your guests can manage a little awkwardness if you really want to do it. I'd just be extremely careful!! Oh and don't do it in your wedding dress, I was tripping on my dress just dancing barefoot!
