First Dance Nerves

Megan, on June 25, 2017 at 5:23 PM Posted in Planning 0 23

So FH is really nervous about our first dance. He is not really a great dancer (neither am I) and so now I am getting nervous too. I don't want 200 people staring at us looking like we are a couple at our middle school dance, arms on shoulders side stepping for 4 minutes. My mom suggested maybe taking a few lessons so we will be more comfortable but I don't know. That kinda seems a little silly to take dance lessons for one dance. Or is this something people actually do? Maybe FH and I are just over thinking. Anyone else having these nerves?

I was really nervous about this as well. It really wasn't that awkward when we were up there.

Maybe have the DJ cut the song short so you aren't out there dancing for a long time

Following, we're also a bit nervous about this. I can dance reasonably well, but FH can't worth a damn. Honestly, I figure people will think we're adorable no matter what we do. Love has a way of putting rose glasses on people. And if anyone tells you that your first dance was awkward, tell them where to stick it.

I would have the dj cut the dance short or invite others to join halfway through.

@Dena my best friend told me this same thing. She said once we are up there it will not be as awkward as we think it will be.

@Amber I haven't really thought of that and not sure how I would feel about the song being cut short but I will discuss with FH to get his thoughts

@MsMac I am sure my family will be "awwing" like crazy no matter what, haha. And you're so right about the rose glasses. Maybe people will find our awkwardness cute as we trip over our feet.

@MnmsMonique asking others to join ... this is another thing I did not think of

I'm sure people will find whatever you do adorable, even if it is step by step. Maybe invite people to join halfway through so all eyes aren't on you the whole 3-4 minutes? That's what we're going to do.

About 2 minutes into our song were having our bridal party join in...then everyone else

We're having our wedding party join in our song about half way through. That way we aren't awkward and alone on the dance floor and we get the wedding party dance over with in one swing. Is that something you could do?

How important is it to you to have the first dance experience? FH and I are also not into the "all eyes on us" thing--the ceremony is plenty of attention on us to last us all evening lol. So we're just nixing the first dance. The way I see it, all of the wedding-y activities are optional. It's fine to do them, fine not to. I don't think any of our guests will miss it personally.

That said, that's just what our thoughts are. I get that a lot of people get excited about having their first dance.

We took some dance lessons -- about 4 private and 3 group...It was a lot of fun and got us through the first dance without just doing the prom sway. We liked them so much we are continuing them for fun date night experiences.

We are taking 4 classes at a local studio closer to the wedding and the instructor told me that after a minute and a half people are going to stop really paying attention anyway

FH can't dance & I'm not the greatest either. We thought about taking lessons & decided against it. It doesn't matter how bad we are, if it's awkward or what anyone thinks. It's special to us & that's all thats important

FH and I can't dance! We are just going to slow dance and sway together... haha...

Thats ok right? Just get lost in the moment and you won't feel the nervousness. That's what I'm hoping for anyway!

Oh having the dance and the song we are dancing to is important to us. We are just super nervous about it. My mom said if we decide we would like a few lessons she will pay for us to have them so we will feel better about it. I am liking the idea of maybe having the wedding party join in half way through. And as @Laura said getting lost in the moment ... that is what FH says he hopes happens that we just get lost and then forget everyone is watching.

We can't dance. Lessons weren't in our budget (or interest). We did the "prom sway" and had the DJ announce for everyone to join in at the halfway point. It didn't feel awkward at all.

We're taking dance lessons and it's made my FH and me both feel much more comfortable - and it's a lot of fun! The dance studio near us offers a free introductory lesson - maybe see if one near you offers this so you can try it out!

Our instructor is teaching us different steps that we can use for any song and is helping us put them together in a routine that flows well.

My fiancé and I are taking dance classes at a Fred Astaire studio. I have never been a confident dancer and the instructor is helping us learn a waltz. She's also going to teach us basic two step and salsa. We're taking 7 classes and there are little parties the studio throws that will help us get better also.
