Swaying back and forth is perfectly acceptable! One of the things that attracted me to FH was that he loved to dance, but we are by no means professional dancers. LOL We are taking classes but it's because we want to do a secret dance. Finding time to practice though has been quite a challenge.
Sadly, I am the opposite. FH is a master of all things physical, including dancing. I, on the other hand, am in the running for World's Greatest Klutz. Not sure exactly what we're going to do about it yet!
But in answer to your question, swaying back and forth is perfectly fine. I've actually never been to a wedding myself where they did anything other than that.
My FH is actually the better dancer of the two of us. I'm making us take a couple of lessons - I want to get better and we need to coordinate with each other better (I'm super short, he's super tall).
ETA: we're taking general lessons - I don't actually want a choreographed dance routine. That happened at a wedding I was at recently where both bride and groom are awkward non-dancers, and it just looked weird - they looked super focused and kinda uncomfortable throughout it lol)

I'm planning to have us take a couple of lessons starting in the fall, so we can practice something other than swaying. I don't want to do anything fancy or a secret dance. I was thinking of learning rumba or something like that, so we can do a classy dance without having something choreographed. It will be handy to know in the future anyway. I recently learned how to do the hustle and that is a lot of fun! Too bad my FH didn't go to those classes with me.
We are starting a Wedding Dance class on Wednesday.
it's..... it's already been a challenge. We initially decided to take swing dancing. FH was amazing at it. i was terrible and embarrassing and hated it.
So we signed up for wedding dancing in May, and it got canceled because not enough people signed up. They moved us to the June class, and I got a kidney stone on the day of the first class. So now we're trying July and hoping I suck at it less than I did at swing.
Words cannot express.....he does this thing with his arms. Almost like a gorilla.....I'm not marrying him because of his dance moves...that's for damn sure..
YES. I'm all right at dancing, but FH does not care for it. Our first dance song is a bit faster than a traditional first dance, and I want us to practice dancing to it so we don't look super uncoordinated or worse, fall on our faces. We've been planning on practicing since about last August when we chose our song, and we've practiced a grand total of zero times. Crunch time
OMG he is an awful dancer! My MOH is a choreographer so she is going to put together something simple and repetitive for us and teach it to us before the wedding. I'd say get lessons if its something he's up for. If not, the middle school sway is perfectly fine!
My FH is a dancing machine. I'm the one who has absolutely no dancing ability whatsoever.
I'm really scared about making a fool of myself. Luckily, I still have over a year to figure that out. :/

My husband refused to take a dance class; so we looked pretty bad out there. He's still refusing, even after we danced every night on our recent 2-week vacation.
I was in the same situation.. I so wanted to take a Ballroom class with him, but he refused. We did the prom sway! It wasn't so bad. And.. I was lucky to even have a second dance with him.. prom sway, again! LOL!
