First dance, father/daughter dance songs

Jennifer, on October 14, 2014 at 7:50 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

So my question is, how long is too long? I would like our first dance song to be, "I can't help falling in love with you," by Elvis. This song is about 3 minutes, which I don't think is too long.

The father/daughter dance song that I would like is the slow version of, "Forever Young," by Bob Dylan. This song means a lot to me, because my dad read it at my Bat Mitzvah as a reading. The only problem is, this song is 5 minutes long. Is that too long? Will people get antsy? Can we have guests come and join us about a minute into the song, once our photographer gets a few pictures?

I don't think your first dance song is too long and if you're worried about the song with your dad being too long, speak to your dj about editing it or looking for other mixes of the songs that are a bit shorter.

To be perfectly honest, most of the time when I go to weddings I either don't even notice that the first dances ARE going on as I am socializing at the table or with other guests OR if I'm super close to the bride and groom, I may watch part of it, but then go back to the table and start to chat so I wouldn't notice either way that it was a longer song

Agree with Maltese. Guests won't notice a minute extra here or there. Pick the songs that are special to you!

Doesn't seem too long. And you can definitely have guests come up and join you a minute or two into the song; I have seen that done and it was special.

Maybe the DJ can invite other fathers to dance with their daughters at the 2.5/3 minute mark. I've seen this done a couple of times. People like it because they are included and what dad doesn't jump at the chance to dance with his little girl?

Find a point in the song where it makes sense to fade out around the 3 min mark and have your DJ do that. 5 min is pretty long.

Talk to the DJ and have them do a fade out. My dance with my dad was about 2.5 minutes but we got the parts we wanted.

Our first dance song was about 5 minutes long but at about the 3 minute mark we invited all of our guests out to the floor.
