Finger foods vs a meal

We are thinking about having finger food as our "meal" for the reception, since the ceremony will be at 7pm. Would it be normal to have a cocktail hour before that as well? What should we serve at each one? We were thinking about just doing desserts at the reception and other finger food at the...

We are thinking about having finger food as our "meal" for the reception, since the ceremony will be at 7pm. Would it be normal to have a cocktail hour before that as well? What should we serve at each one? We were thinking about just doing desserts at the reception and other finger food at the cocktail hour. Opinions?

    If you're not doing a dinner. there really is no 'while we're taking pictures' time and then a different time; it is all one time, if that makes any sense.

    You need a meal. Don't call it a cocktail hour. How long is your ceremony? Ideally people would have food/drinks in hand by 7:45

    If not planning to serve dinner, state that in the invite! 7 pm would still make me think dinner was being served
