Fiancé has two last names?

Haley, on April 22, 2019 at 8:13 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7
This may be a stupid question but I can’t seem to figure it out for the life of me. My fiancé has two last names, not hyphenated. His parents weren’t married when he was born so apparently they had to do that. He only goes by one which is his fathers last name. My question is, can he change his last name to just one when we get married? I’m of course taking his (one or both- preferably one lol). I’ve tried to google it and seem to get no luck lol. We live in Georgia. Thanks in advance Smiley smile

You can change your last name for any reason you'd like, it's just a different process when you do it because of marriage. Long story, yes, he can change it. Check with your county for details

Yeah. Anyone can change their names. Change your name to Willy Wonka or Harry Potter. It's all possible! Haha.

Yes, as pp said, anybody can change their last name legally. Since this would not be a change due to marriage, it would have to go through court where he would submit a change of name petition (paperwork to fill out & file) & then court would typically assign a hearing where the name change is officially approved.

Anyone can change their name at any time. The actual process depends on your state.

It depends on the state, but it looks like Georgia has a process to change the name of the groom. https://www.prenuptialagreements.org/name-change-men/ Most of this article is about California, but looks like it's possible in Georgia.

I would check with the county clerk. My nesr friend just got married and her fiance had 2 last names. When they applied for their marriage license, he literally just dropped one of the names, but we live in NY so it could be different.

Hi Haley! Did you check this out with the county clerk? What was the outcome?
