FH's tuxedo pants are too long. What should I do?

Stacy, on August 7, 2013 at 10:24 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

I told the tuxedo rental shop that I thought his pants were too long and they didn't do anything about it. They were touching the floor behind the back of his shoe and wrinkled in the calf area. What can I do to make them shorter without permanently altering the pants? I don't want them to look stupid. Any suggestions?

Double-sided tape? fold them up inside and use it to hold them? or pin them up.

ETA: can you take them back to the shop and get him some different pants? you have a couple days.

He's out of town until Friday evening so he can't get different pants. The shop said they were supposed to be long like that. I told them I disagreed and I didn't like how they looked. They did not get him new pants.

    Safety pin might work too.

It's 3 days before my wedding. It's too late to take my business elsewhere. I read a review of another location and the bride said she had the same problem. They refuse to make any changes to help the tux fit better. I should have gone somewhere else. I'll put that in my review.

Iron hem- my savior!!! Get it at any grocery store usually. It's a strip of tape basically, and when you iron the hem it will make it stick together. It's amazing.

Is iron hem removable? We have to return the pants in the same condition and length as they left the store.

That fabric tape is amazing. That's pretty much how my wedding dress was held together lol BUT i have never tried to remove it. If you use it, test it out on a different piece of fabric first. Just to see if it does infact come off completely.

    Tack it.

Fold it up, put a couple of loose running tacking stitches to hold the hem up then iron that hem as sharp as you can.

Couple of snips, iron it back flat - the rental company will be none the wiser.

I barely know how to sew by hand. What are tacking stitches?

I agree you should tack it. Fold up the hem roand iron it to the proper length, get a needle and thread and stitch through the folded up hem then grab a very tiny thread of the pant leg (so you can't see the stitch on the front of the leg) and go back through the folded hem, and keep doing that the whole way around the hem. It's pretty quick and simple once you get the hang of it and there may be a tutorial online for an invisible stitch. Like Poppet mentioned above after the wedding you just snip out the stitches and iron the pant leg and voila!

Very loose stitches. They're normally used to hold fabric in the right sorta place till it's sewn with a machine or by hand.

Wide standard stitches basically. In out, in out, nothing fancy but it gets the job done.
