So my FH's grandmother and my grandmother are both in the nursing home. I know my grandma won't be able to participate at all as she has dementia and can't be moved or travel. However, FH grandmother (FH and his grandma are very close) is very alert and in good health. She had a hip replacement and refused PT so she did not heal and cannot live on her own. We want her at the wedding and reception, but she hasn't been moved in almost 2 years. It's not that she CAN'T be moved, no one in the family is willing to move her. I suggested someone who doesn't mind staying back at the nursing home with skype or something so she can see the ceremony, but she is very paranoid and does not trust technology (When she lived at home she refused to wear her Life Alert because the government could spy on her through it). Help! I want to find a solution that works for all parties.

Honestly I would hire a nurse (or a cna) for the day and a transport to bring her to and from so she can come. Yes it would be a cost, but i think a reasonable one.

My husband's grandmother is in a nursing home and wheelchair bound. The nursing home should have some kind of transportation system. Every year at Christmas my MIL and all her siblings chip in to bring their mother to Christmas Eve at my husband's aunt's house. It costs quite a bit, but we all get to celebrate Christmas Eve with her. They drop her off around 7 and pick her back up around 9. For our wedding, my In-Laws paid to have her dropped off at the ceremony and picked up from the ceremony by the transportation system through the Nursing Home. Maybe y'all can look into something like that.

WI private aids are much cheaper than CA. Here (WA) a private aid will cost you about 12-15 an hour. But, yes they are expensive.

As a CNA, if I lived there and were certified in your state I would come do it for free Smiley smile I'm a sucker for weddings!

I know she hasn't left the home since she's been there and uncle is worried how she would do outside the home, but you have just over a year until the wedding. Could some short trips be arranged to see how she does? If she can't attend, I hope she will watch via Skype. A friend's grand parents couldn't attend her wedding, so they Skyped in (the priest was excited to do this), they wore bouts/corsage, the other residents watched the ceremony too. After the ceremony, the residents enjoyed cake and punch that the bride's family had provided and arranged with the assisted living facility. The residents were thrilled to be part of the day!

My grandma was also in a nursing home before she passed. My aunt died and we had one of the nurses bring her. (She was in a wheel chair) I think you should be able to speak to someone in the nursing home business office and explain the situation. I'm sure they would be more then accomodating. Good luck!

We were in a similar situation with DH's 99 year old grandmother. She is wheelchair bound and due to a stroke a handful of years ago has no upper boy strength as well. DH's parents went back and forth about getting her there but ultimately decided they did not want the responsibility that day. DH's uncle did not like this and paid for a CNA and a van to transport her to the ceremony, pictures and dinner. Afterwards I heard it did not go without its issues, so if you go this route it may be worthwhile to find a way to test it out once before the big day. Our plan B was to stop by the home the next morning dressed in gown and suit and take pictures with her there.
