FH got summoned to jury duty a week before out wedding. Help!

L + A, on March 14, 2015 at 8:31 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

Neither of us have been summoned before... Ladies what can we do to get out of it? Anyone have experience with this? We have our wedding on a Saturday and leave for our honeymoon that Monday so he can't exactly be going to jury duty then.

Ugggggggh I'm all for doing my civic duty but WHY so inconvenient, government?!

You say summoned -- does that mean he answered the initial letter? In our state, if you don't ever answer them, nothing happens. When you answer them, you're in the system. My opinion of late has changed -- I will answer them. I know how important it is to do your civic duty. I also know what can happen when the wrong people get on a jury.

Getting married is probably a reason for being excused. If it poses a significant hardship, a potential juror is typically excused. Where is he in the process?

Getting married should be good enough excuse. If he got assigned to any kind of serious trial he would definitely be there for a week plus. They would understand that he can't miss his WEDDING! (I hope).

Call them and ask about it. I would hope a wedding is good enough excuse. He may have to provide the license or an invitation for proof though.

In Texas, you can postpone it. Don't make up bogus excuses and risk contempt of court. First see if you can postpone. If not, he should admit to his wedding/honeymoon - he might very well be excused because of it.

But also it could very well be a one-day case. He'll learn more when he gets there.

    Thanks ladies.

Centerpiece: I'm Washington, you just get your summons date. There is nothing to answer, that's just what you have to do.

Getting married will definitely get you excused. Believe me, I see people get off for way less than that. Do you know if it's a civil or criminal case? About 90% of our civil cases are personal injury (typically auto accident). If for some reason he does get called in, just tell him to say something semi-inflammatory during voir dire lol. A good lawyer will ask if anyone doesn't believe in giving damages for pain and suffering. If he says he doesn't think people should get money for that, usually the attorney won't want him lol.

Here in California you can postpone jury duty for a year or to a better time. Maybe check to see if that would work wherever you are.

I am actually serving jury duty right now for the first time and wasn't sure how it worked if you had prior engagements or appointments. I guess it may be different everywhere, but the first day I went for orientation they told us just to let them know what we had going on and as long as we didn't abuse it we would be excused because they understand that we have lives too.

We were planning a week and half long trip in May when I'll still be serving and I just let them know the dates and they marked me off calendar for that time frame.

I had to postpone my first summons because I was scheduled during finals week in college. The nice thing about needing to postpone it was the allowed me to choose the week I would be summoned back.

I don't know if any of you -- particularly the Arizona brides -- have been following the Jodi Arias case, but after 27 months, the trial was finished last week. She'll be sentenced in April to life without parole, but it's a formality. Out of 12 jurors and two alternates, the vote was very close -- 11 to one for the death penalty (with both alternates saying they would have voted for the DP). There are allegations of juror misconduct with the hold-out, and both the prosecutor (who prosecuted her husband and sent him to jail -- something she failed to disclose during jury selection) and the jury foreman asked the judge to remove her when she was unwilling to deliberate and it was shown -- via Facebook -- that she had an extreme bias . If the DP was meant for anyone, it was meant for this convicted, first degree murderer. After watching that trial, I will never ignore jury duty again.
