Female usher?

Arzel, on December 17, 2012 at 1:03 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

Would it be strange to have a female usher? I need someone to hand out programs and watch the guest book. I want to have my guest book at the ceremony as well because there are several guest who can not make the reception but can make the ceremony. Anyone else have a female usher?

I don't think its strange if that's what she'll be doing. I think it might be a little weird if she's seating people but still not totally strange.

We don't have a side or a seating plan. I was going to just have the programs in a basket by the door but then I realized that I should probably have someone there to pass them out. And even though we don't have a seating plan the first 2 rows are reserved and I would like to have someone to explain that to people.

Just curious @Tiffany why you you think it would be strange if she was seating people?

I don't think it is weird at all. It is your wedding so just do what makes you happy. You could even call her a 'hostess' or 'attendant' instead of an usher. Since she would not have typical usher seating duties.

I was thinking of doing the same. I dont think its wierd at all. I will have a seat yourself policy at mine As for seating people, traditionally male ushers will walk arm/arm with female guests to be seated so that may be why Tiffany thinks it may be weird, but they can walk guest to be seated they dont have to hold hands or anything.

It amuses me that in an age in which we have women running for President, people are still questioning whether a woman can seat guests at a wedding.

I just think its more natural for a man to show a woman where to sit. But if someone had female ushers I wouldn't think it was crazy. Just different.

I think it's fine, of course you could always do as Debbie suggested and use the word attendant/hostess. But I don't see anything wrong with women acting as ushers. It's very common at non wedding events - broadway shows, ballet, the Met...

I like the word hostess. I think that is an awesome way to say it instead of putting Usher.

I called mine an usherette lol (I didn't use titles on the program, just called her that to myself). I had 2 ushers -- one that sat my MIL and one that sat my FIL (both single). Our ushers didn't seat any other guests -- figured our guests could find their own seats...but our wedding wasn't super formal.

We will have about 75 people at our wedding/reception seated at round tables. We have no attendants. We will have two "ushers" at the door to seat people: my best friend and my FI's BIL. We picked them because between the two of them they should know just about every guest attending and could greet them by name and show them to their table. The older I get, the less likely I am to follow traditions. I'm turning 50 next year. Hate to think what I'll be like at 70!
