Father/Daughter dance songs?!

aknight, on September 12, 2016 at 5:30 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

Need ideas for a father daughter dance song. We are close now, but growing up (before he got off drugs and discovered Prozac) he was a raging asshole. So all the songs I find online don't really fit.. We didn't get along when I was younger, and I've never really been a "daddy's girl", so all the mushy sweet songs I can't see myself dancing to because they're not really true for our situation. Anyone else in the same boat? :/

My brother and I are doing a dance together since we don't have our parents anymore. We are dancing to "There you'll be" by Faith Hill. It's a super sweet song that doesn't talk about being a daddy's girl. That's all the insight I really have, as I struggled with picking a song for this as well.

My dad and I are dancing to an acoustic, slower version on "Sweet Child O Mine" by AC/DC

I also struggled with this choice, which was complicated by the fact that he's technically my step-dad, so all the songs that talk about seeing an infant's face and stuff are awkward.

I'm going with "Rainbow Connection" (the version from the recent Muppets movie). We have watched a lot of the show as well as the movie together over the years, and it seemed silly and fun, but also sweet enough for the occasion.

    Thank y'all!

I had thought about "Sweet child o mine", but I read somewhere that he wrote it with his much younger girlfriend and I thought people would think it was weird. Lol BUT then again, who the hell would know that if they hadn't looked it up, and if I dissected every song they'd all be weird. Idk why I'm making this so difficult!

I'll look up those other songs.

    Thank y'all for your help!

Maybe you would like "time in a bottle" we are doing it as our first dance but if I remember correctly there's not anything inherently romantic about it. More about spending time with people you love.

ETA: the song is by Jim Groce

@Ceelen - My parents' first dance was time in a bottle - and they're still together 40+ years later - classic and good vibes attached to it in my mind!!

I think my dad and I will dance to Nat King Cole and Natalie singing Unforgettable or something else by them or Bing Crosby - as a nod to my grandmother who is no longer with us, and something that's a little older so my dad will like it more too

I'm in a similar situation, where I didn't speak to my father for years and as much as no one will REALLY be listening to the song, it was important for me that it not be a lie and represent something that my father never was. So I'm thinking about doing "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton

My dad was always gone, but during his father/daughter dance for his second wedding we danced to cruisin (we used to sing it together) and butterfly kisses for my little sister. We're both grease fans and thought instead of just dancing we'd sing /dance to the finale song from grease (a little inappropriate for a father/daughter but we're just not that affectionate) or I thought about just doing something totally silly and off the wall with his old dance moves.

My FH wants to dance with my daughter to "I don't dance" by Lee Brice. So we may just do that all together who knows... Still have a ways to go

I'm dancing with my dad to Walk With You by Edwin McCain. It's my stepdad (who I see as my only dad) but he and my mom didn't married till a few days before my 18th birthday. So he's only been around for a short period of time. This song is a really good one!

My fiance gave me the opportunity to pick out his mother/son dance at our wedding and I am having a hard time!

I had a good idea though, I adore his mom and they really love one another so I asked her what her father/daughter dance was at her own wedding with her dad. I really like that concept, BUT- she doesn't remember it.

My dad and I are close but he's a little rough around the edges and not emotional, we picked the Smashing Pumpkins cover of "Landslide" because that's a sweet song and his favorite band, I would suggest possibly doing the same and looking at songs by his favorite band OR possibly songs you listened to together when you were little, doesn't have to make sense to everyone in the room and / or be cookie cutter! Smiley smile
