Father Daughter Dance Song

Trisha, on January 8, 2021 at 11:30 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 15
Hey everyone! So I’ve been bouncing ideas for songs for the father daughter dance off my dad and he was coming up with songs I’ve seen 100 times at other weddings. We finally landed on one that we agree on but I’m worried there is a line or two that’ll make it a little cringy. The song is Beautiful Day by U2. We have a really sentimental attachment to this song because the best concert we ever attended together was U2 when I was in high school. Every school day after we saw that concert, (because I was a pretty typical depressed teenager) my dad would play that song over the house stereo to wake me up in a positive mood for the day.
I’ve always interpreted the lyrics in question to be singing about/to God rather than a romantic partner, but I wanted to get an outside opinion. We’re not going to have a professional DJ as the venue provides someone to coordinate and play through our playlist as requested so we don’t have someone who could cut/edit...for those of you who don’t know the song I’ll paste the lyrics in a comment below

    The heart is a bloom
Shoots up through the stony ground
    There's no room
No space to rent in this town
    You're out of luck
And the reason that you had to care
    The traffic is stuck
And you're not moving anywhereYou thought you'd found a friend
To take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand
In return for graceIt's a beautiful day
    Sky falls, you feel like
    It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get awayYou're on the road
    But you've got no destination
    You're in the mud
In the maze of her imaginationYou love this town
Even if that doesn't ring true
    You've been all over
And it's been all over youIt's a beautiful day
    Don't let it get away
    It's a beautiful day (Oooh, ooh)Touch me
Take me to that other place
    Teach me love
I know I'm not a hopeless caseSee the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea outSee the Bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light
And see the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colors came outDay, Day
Day, DayIt was a beautiful day
    Don't let it get away
    Beautiful dayTouch me
Take me to that other place
    Reach me
I know I'm not a hopeless caseWhat you don't have, you don't need it now
What you don't know, you can feel it somehow
What you don't have, you don't need it now
    Don't need it now
    Was a beautiful day

I never heard this song before so I just listened to it and in my opinion it doesn't at all sound like a song you'd dance with your father to at your wedding.

I think that's a beautiful song. Sadly my father daughter dance song will be Michael Bolten "Father's & Daughters" dancing with my brother while pictures him play on the screen. My dad passed away due to cancer in 2018.

I’m so sorry to hear that, Teresa. My FH and I both have very dear family members that have passed who’s presence will be missed greatly. Things won’t be the same without them.

No one will be analyzing lyrics unless the entire song is inappropriate. If the song has meaning to both of you then use it. If that one line bothers you that much, ask the dj to skip over it or cut the song down.

My dad and I danced to "Time of My Life" from Dirty Dancing, so I get it.

Our DJ edited out the parts that might have been weird, and cut it so that it was more appropriate. That was "our" movie when I was little (I got the point but wasn't able to articulate it until I was in my late 20s, oops), and we both used to tone-deaf warble to the songs in his car.

If that's a song that means a lot to the both of you, that's the song you dance to.

I am also doing my Father/Daughter dance with my brother. Mine passed in 2013 of cancer as well. We’re dancing to “You should Be Here” by Cole Swindel.

That’s a great song! I wouldn’t worry about it. Most people won’t pay attention to that.

I love that song! I never took it as romantic or sexual. I always viewed it as inspirational, a song about waking up to a beautiful, brand-new day full of possibility. If this is what you consider your and your dad's song, especially with the story behind it, by all means go for it!
